About This Cause

The Humane Society of Sonoma County is a donor-supported safe haven for animals. The animals in our care receive medical treatment (including spay/neuter surgery), training services, and adoption assistance. We believe that no effort is too great when a life is at stake. We have locations in Santa Rosa and Healdsburg. We are a locally-founded, locally-funded nonprofit organization supported through donations from our community. As the first animal shelter in the county, the Humane Society of Sonoma County has a longstanding tradition of providing protection, compassion, love and care for animals in our community. From the beginning, we have made it our mission to give hope to animals in need of a second chance. We continue to reach further to respond to the changing needs of our community. In an effort to reduce numbers of unwanted and abandoned animals, in 2010 we began providing an affordable spay/neuter clinic. In 2013, to help make Sonoma County an even safer place for homeless animals, we signed our Adoption Agreement with Sonoma County Animal Services to accept into our care any healthy or treatable animal that they are unable to place. And we opened the Healdsburg shelter to restore much needed animal services to the northern part of our county. As a no-kill shelter we rescue, rehabilitate and place animals into loving homes. We are able to do this life-saving work through financial contributions from our community and many hours of service from our dedicated volunteers. We do not receive county tax dollars or government funding, nor are we affiliated with the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States. We provide a high level of medical care, socialization and humane living space for the animals that come into our shelter. This past year alone, we helped match more than 2,000 animals with their new families. Our Foster, "Fospice" and Adoptions By Owner programs help even more animals find loving homes. We also offer a full roster of Behavior and Training classes for dogs.
