Mission Statement
San Francisco Botanical Garden Society (SFBGS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed in 1955, works in partnership with the City and County of San Francisco and its Recreation and Parks Department to support the San Francisco Botanical Garden, a 55-acre living museum in Golden Gate Park with more than 8,000 different kinds of plants from around the world. The Botanical Garden is known for its unique, diverse and significant plant collections, with almost 30 percent of the species wild-collected and many rare and endangered. With the help of members, donors and volunteers, SFBGS funds Garden improvements; provides curatorial and plant collections management services; propagates plants for the Botanical Garden and for sale to the public; maintains the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture; operates the Garden bookstore; and offers year-round educational and community programming for children, youth, and adults including outdoor education for more than 13,000 children each year.
About This Cause
Membership fees, donations, and grants help make it possible for the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society to accomplish the following each year: -Serve more than 13,000 children, many of whom attend San Francisco public schools, by providing free outdoor education classes through the Youth Education Program. Children and youth of all ages will learn about nature in nature, gaining a sense of wonder and love of nature that can last a lifetime. -Welcome 400,000 visitors from San Francisco, the Bay Area, and around the world, instilling a deeper understanding of the necessity to respect the environment and conserve Earth’s biological diversity. -Recruit and organize community volunteers who will contribute more than 40,000 hours to the Garden's educational programs and maintenance. -Help us to maintain the most significant magnolia collection for conservation purposes outside of China and protect more than 8,000 plants from around the globe, including many rare and endangered species.
