Mission Statement

The mission of A.P. Giannini Foundation is to promote the discovery and treatment of human diseases that impair the human body. To accomplish this objective, the Foundation launched the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program to support innovative and translational research in the basic sciences and applied fields; train postdoctoral fellows to become established investigators; and offer opportunities for talented junior scientists to develop research agendas under the mentorship of California’s leading physicians, researchers and scholars.

About This Cause

A.P. Giannini established the Foundation in 1945 to bring to fruition his long-held dream to promote the study, discovery, treatment and care of diseases that impair the human body. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over 950 fellowships to postdoctoral biomedical researchers at California’s accredited medical schools. The Foundation awards between 8 and 10 new postdoctoral fellowships annually on a peer-review basis, and funds fellowships up to a maximum of three years. Fellows receive a stipend during their research training, including $55,000 in Year 1, $56,000 in Year 2 and $57,000 in Year 3. Giannini fellows have gone on to become some of the most highly regarded medical and scientific professionals in their respective fields and to serve as mentors to succeeding generations of scientists. Their research has resulted in innovative scientific patents and extraordinary medical applications that have led to the formation of biotechnology companies. Fellows hold leadership positions at schools of medicine throughout California and the United States, the public sector and industry, including: Roche, Gilead, Calico, the National Institutes of Health, White House, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, UCSF, Harvard University and University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center, to name a few. In recent years the Foundation launched a robust Career Development Program to prepare fellows to pursue leadership positions in academia, industry, public and non-traditional career pathways. The program includes: an annual Colloquium, a Communication Training Program and a Leadership Program.
