About This Cause
The League of Women Voters, a membership organization, has two separate and distinct roles: Voter Service/Citizen Education We provide unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues by producing Candidates Forums, Pros & Cons events, and VotersEdge.org. We o Build citizen participation in the democratic process o Study key community issues at all government levels o Enable people to seek positive solutions to public policy issues through education and conflict management Action/Advocacy We are always nonpartisan, but, after study we use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest. Without a position, action/advocacy cannot be taken. We have a strong polity of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion The League of Women Voters was founded as a national organization by Carrie Chapman Catt in 1920, six months before the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, giving women the right to vote after a 72-year struggle. Its stated purpose was to encourage women to use their new power to participate in shaping public policy. The League of Women Voters of San Jose was established in 1945, on the 25th anniversary of the founding of the national organization, and became the League of Women Voters of San Jose/Santa Clara in 1973. Today we include the cities of San Jose, Santa Clara, Cupertino, and Sunnyvale. Our members are also members of LWV of Santa Clara County, LWV of the Bay Area, LWV of California, and LWV of the United States.
