Mission Statement
Fighting homelessness. Changing lives.
About This Cause
Established in 1965, the Bay Area Rescue Mission ('BARM') is a 501(c)3 that exists to love without limits the men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and food insecurity—all while valuing their dignity and intrinsic worth. Committed to its mission of "Fighting Homelessness and Changing Lives," BARM's programming has grown in response to the needs of those it serves over the past 59 years. Located in the heart of Richmond, California, and holding a 100% Four-Star rating on Charity Navigator, BARM cares for the whole person. Those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity access daily meals, a food pantry, clothing, supplies, medical services, emergency and long-term shelter, transitional housing, mental health resources, drug and alcohol counseling, and more. BARM refuses to surrender to the idea that poverty is here to stay. With the help of 43 local partners, it's committed to empowering the community to bend the curve with specialized services for those with criminal histories and wraparound programs, including job training, GED preparation, life skills training, and legal assistance. The Chief of the Richmond Police Department, Chief Bisa French, calls BARM "a haven." "[BARM] is a gem in our community. It's a place where people experiencing homelessness can have a safe place to lay their heads, a warm meal to eat, and people who are loving and caring to get them back on their feet." Our under-served, hungry neighbors receive more than 1.8 million meals, 91,104 nights of shelter, and 108,562 hours of classes and counseling in 2023. From desperation to restoration, our programs convey that our neighbors are loved, regardless of their past mistakes, race, faith, age, or gender.
