About This Cause

Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA is an independent, donor-supported, non-profit animal welfare agency. As an open-door shelter, we welcome and provide care to all animals, regardless of age, medical condition, breed or any other criteria, in the service region of Arcadia, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena. PHS has earned a reputation as one of the nation’s best animal care facilities. Some of the exciting programs and services we offer include: • Food, shelter and veterinary care to thousands of domestic and wild animals each year. In 2012, we cared for 11,405 animals from our service cities. • Adoption program to help animals find lasting homes – and help humans find loving animal companions. All animals receive temperament and behavior screening. Potential adopters are interviewed to determine what type of pet would best suit their lifestyle. The goal is to help create a lasting and fulfilling relationship between the animals and its adopter. • Lost animals are checked for identification (such as microchips) and the owners notified. The PHS website is updated twice daily with photos of newly arrived animals so that people can easily check for their lost pets and be reunited quickly. • Humane Education and Outreach to school children, scout troops and other members of our community to learn proper pet care and the appreciation and humane treatment of animals. Our Humane Education Director directs workshops and symposiums throughout the country on the humane care of animals. • Spay/Neuter Program to control pet overpopulation. All animals adopted from the shelter are sterilized before they go to their new home. The cost of the surgery is included in adoption fees. A low cost spay/neuter clinic allows financially burdened families to have their current pets sterilized. • Companion Animals visit retirement communities and other facilities. Others visit libraries where young children can practice reading aloud to a gentle, attentive dog. • Animal Control Officers respond to calls regarding stray, injured and dead animals. They also conduct Cruelty Investigations. • Wildlife Officers picks up and relocate or rehabilitate wildlife in need of help, as well as provide wildlife education to help promote safe, peaceful coexistence with urban wildlife. • Volunteers enjoy a number of unique volunteer opportunities that greatly enrich their lives as well as those of the animals. The program is so popular that there is usually a waiting list to enroll. Some volunteer positions are designed to prepare youths for careers in animal care. • Behavior Programs help owners to understand, control and enrich their pets. • A Disaster Relief Program ensures that all animals in our service area will receive the shelter and care that they need in the event of evacuations caused by disaster—at no cost to their owner. PHS works with police, fire department, city officials and other emergency agencies during disasters such as fires or earthquakes.
