Mission Statement
At the Santa Monica Family YMCA, community is our cause. No member of our community regardless of age, income, or background is ever turned away due to inability to pay. Our mission vital programs include: swimming lessons, youth sports, after school child care, day camp, parent child programs, and more. Annual Campaign donations help offset the total costs of these programs and maintain fees at affordable levels and help us carry out our six key initiatives: 1. Providing membership to those who are unable to afford the fee 2. Helping youth develop leadership skills 3. Teaching youth water safety and the lifesaving skill of swimming 4. Fighting youth obesity through healthy lifestyle enrichment programs 5. Supporting families healthy development through activities that promote quality time and relationship building 6. Sharing the great outdoors with youth through Y's resident, travel and day camping programs.
About This Cause
The Santa Monica Family YMCA, founded in 1901, is proud to serve over 6,300 facility members and touching over 10,000 lives throughout the Santa Monica community annually. Everything we do is designed to nurture the potential of children and teens (Youth Development), improve health and well-being (Healthy Living) and motivate people to support their neighbors and the larger community through service to others (Social Responsibility). Our Y has two facilities, its main facility at 1332 6th Street in Santa Monica and a resident camp, Camp Big Bear, for youth and families in Big Bear, California. The main facility is an 85,000 square foot intergenerational complex that hosts a health and wellness center, aquatics center, gymnasium, licensed child development center for infants, toddlers, and pre-school aged; older youth/teen center; and an older adult center. Everyone is welcome at the Y. Diversity is celebrated and our common ground promoted. Over 6,000 individuals of all ages are expected to participate in our programs in 2015. Over $300,000 will be allocated to subsize our "mission-vital programs" so that fees can be maintained at affordable levels to maximize participation and community impact. The total costs (facility operation, administration, insurance, etc.) to operate many of our "mission vital community programs"-swimming lessons, youth sports, after school child care, day camp, parent child programs, and more, exceed reasonable revenue goals so subsidy is essential to maintain them. Our Y has identifiied the following six priorities as the key initiatives that are funded through and whose operation is dependent on the success of our Annual Campaign donations. These initiatives are: 1. Sharing the great outdoors with youth through the Y's resident, travel and day camping programs. Over 2,500 members of our community will receive financial assistance to be members of our Y or participate in youth programs in 2015. Some will be on full scholarship; others will be on partial scholarship. In addition youth, teen and senior memberships are subsized to help lend a hand of support to these special groups to maximize their participation. Men, women, boys and girls, teens, senior citizens and familiies from diverse backgrounds compose our financial aid recipients. There are many in our community who find the Y affordable, but there are many who need our help as the weekly requests for assistance has not diminished. The Y give $20,000 monthly in membership subsidy for those wo cannot afford the full fee. No one at our Y is turned away for inability to pay.
