Mission Statement
The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.
About This Cause
To fulfill our mission, the BGCLB offers more than twenty programs, all are conducted with the goal of providing youth the tools they need to attain self-sufficiency and build a productive life. Programs are designed with youth input and meet three objectives: 1) to adhere to California State Education Standards; 2) to be interesting and engaging to youth; and, 3) to help fulfill our mission. Services are provided for the nominal fee of $15 per year. No one is ever turned away because of an inability to pay. Why: The BGCLB is one of the only resources for youth in Long Beach that provides comprehensive after school and summer services. Now more than ever, teachers, parents and caregivers are relying on the BGCLB as community, city and state program budgets are cut and programs discontinued. Long Beach is home to large numbers of low-income families and, as such, has a significant issue with crime, has a high teen pregnancy rate, a high dropout rate (20%) and only 60.8% graduate within 4 years. After-school programs can have an enormous impact on graduation rates, teen pregnancy and other behavioral risk factors. One study entitled “Critical Hours,” commissioned by the Nellie Mae Educational Foundation, found that young students who attended after-school programs have greater engagement in learning and show higher academic performance than those not involved in such programs. What: BGCLB currently offers twenty different programs to its members. Each of the program activities builds a positive self-identity, competencies, community and civic involvement, health & well being, and a moral compass in our members. Who: BGCLB serves youth ages 6-18, 90% of whom are economically disadvantaged. 47% are from single-parent families. Where and When: BGCLB is comprised of 11 sites operating five days per week. The clubs are open from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Summer programs are offered from June – September with varying hours. All program activities and service region are in Long Beach, CA.
