Mission Statement
Marshall B. Ketchum University (MBKU), home of the Southern California College of Optometry, has expanded its reach to offer a range of interprofessional programs and health care initiatives, including a School of Physician Assistant Studies and a College of Pharmacy. The founder of the college, Marshall B. Ketchum, was a medical doctor, pharmacist, and passionate advocate for optometric education. As MBKU expands beyond its original emphasis on optometry, we continue to be driven by our founding values of Innovation, Caring, Accountability, Respect and Excellence, and a renewed vision for meeting the nation’s need for highly trained health care experts. Rooted in our heritage, but looking forward to the future, the Ketchum name captures the essence of that vision—a comprehensive health care university, built upon a legacy of over 100 years of academic excellence and clinical teaching.
About This Cause
Marshall B. Ketchum University (MBKU), home of the Southern California College of Optometry, was founded in 1904 as the Los Angeles Medical School of Ophthalmology and Optometry. In 1973, the College moved from its Los Angeles campus to a seven-acre campus in Fullerton. It was at this time that it was renamed the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO). Today, SCCO exisits as one of three colleges under a new university structure, accompanied by the School of Physician Assistant Studies and the College of Pharmacy. Marshall B. Ketchum University remains an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, accredited educational institution. As an organization, MBKU operates as a graduate-level health care and clinical education institution for optometry, PA and pharmacy studies. Academic instruction on the campus in Fullerton is supplemented with clinical experiential education at two primary clinical centers as well as clinical rotation sites across the nation to ensure patient access and hands-on clinical training for our future graduates. MBKU currently operates two patient eye care centers—one in Anaheim and the second in the heart of Los Angeles—and sees over 17,500 patients annually for routine and specialty care. Comprehensive vision services include both primary eye care and specialized patient services: • Basic vision examinations • Pediatric vision screening, vision care and vision therapy • Ocular disease diagnosis; ophthalmology consultation and laser treatment • Contact lenses and prosthetics fitting • Low vision rehabilitation and eyewear/optical dispensing Among other initiatives, Ketchum Health Anaheim is home to the Children’s Vision Initiative at MBKU, serving pediatric vision and health needs for Orange County’s underserved elementary school children. This is a priority project at MBKU that makes use of our pediatric residents, faculty and interns to examine and diagnose vision and eye health issues for children in area Title I elementary schools. The Pediatric Low Vision & Vision Therapy Residency is a specialty clinical position at MBKU specifically designed for advanced education and clinical experience opportunities related to blind and low vision children ages 0-5 years in conjunction with our community partner programs. The University is also home to an advanced Cornea & Contact Lens Residency program onsite as well as many offsite rotation programs, among the best in the nation.
