Five Acres promotes safety, wellbeing and permanency for children and their families by building on their strengths and empowering them within communities.
About This Cause
Originally founded in downtown Los Angeles as an orphanage, Five Acres' initial mission was simply to provide safety to children who had no home. In time, our mission expanded to also focus on the well-being of clients and caring for the mental and emotional health of children who were increasingly coming to us as a result of abuse or neglect. Having grown to an agency caring for more than 6,000 children and family members annually across six counties, we now strive for permanency – a permanent, loving home for all children in our care. These three pillars of our mission - safety, well-being and permanency - provide the framework for all Five Acres programs. Programs include: 1) Community-Based prevention programs - treating children, youth, young adults, and families in homes, schools, and community-based settings. These programs provide mental and behavioral services to promote and restore healthy function and keep children safe and families intact. Specialty programs are available, including counseling for deaf and hard-of-hearing (HoH) individuals and families with deaf and HoH family members (ASL, English, Spanish available). 2) Foster Care programs place foster children with certified, caring families and provide ongoing support services. Five Acres continuously recruits, trains, approves, and works with foster families who open their homes and hearts to children with exceptional needs. 3) Adoption programs support families through the process of adopting from the foster care system. This includes a mentorship program for adoptive families and children provided by other adoptees and adoptive parents. 4) Residential Services provide in-patient care and treatment programs for foster children and those who require residential treatment for significant emotional, behavioral, and mental health conditions. Since the agency's founding in 1888, Five Acres has reached more than 300,000 individuals with services for children and families in crisis.
