About This Cause

Avalon-Carver was founded in the 1940's in South Los Angeles (South LA) as a place for people of diverse backgrounds to come together in one space and work to make their community thrive. Through decades of community service, we have become a place of growth, unity, family, education and positive change and a cornerstone of community hope and pride. We seek to support our children so they can become leaders and change-agents in our city, our nation, and the world. Avalon-Carver offers programs and services in the following core areas that serve over 10,000 children and their families each year: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math): From the Cradle to Calculus Helping youth acquire the necessary skills to succeed in a digital economy, understand emergent technologies and become the leaders of tomorrow through Next Generation Science Standards curriculum. We serve over 5,300 students annually. NUTRITION: Ending Child Hunger Through our USDA federally funded nutrition program, we provide free lunches and snacks in high need areas of South Los Angeles. Our program targets children and youth 18 and under during the school year and in the summer. We serve over 100,000 meals annually. PREVENTION: Promoting Healthy Living Our Prevention Program activities aim to reduce underage drinking and substance use. Services are culturally competent and evidence-based with a focus on both community and individual interventions to address alcohol and other drug use within our community. We serve 1,000 youth annually. DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE: Promoting Safety and Healthy Choices The objective of the DUI program is to reduce the number of repeat DUI offenses by persons who complete state-licensed DUI programs. Each year, we serve over 200 adults. Avalon-Carver’s 8-member Board of Directors oversees an annual operating budget of over $2.5 million, comprised of state and federal funding.
