Mission Statement
Los Angeles Urban League (LAUL) serves, educates and empowers African-Americans and other disadvantaged residents of Los Angeles County. LAUL’s mission is to help residents become educated, economically self-reliant, and healthy by providing targeted social programs and advocating for issues that benefit our constituents.
About This Cause
The Los Angeles Urban League ("LAUL" or "the Urban League") is a 100+ year-old social service organization, and one of the flagship affiliates of the National Urban League, which is based in New York City. Since 1921, the Los Angeles Urban League (LAUL) has been at the forefront of the civil rights movement, identifying and addressing issues that are of concern to African Americans and other minorities in Los Angeles and throughout the state of California. Today, under the leadership of Michael Lawson the LAUL is continuing its mission, expanding its impact, and building its reputation as a pillar of economic justice in Los Angeles. LAUL works in partnership with local, state and federal government, major colleges and universities, non-profit agencies and private sector firms to provide unique connections between the power structure, communities and the information and services each need. The Urban League's direct service programs center around these five areas: Education; Entrepreneurship; Health and Wellness; Housing; and Workforce development. Our advocacy efforts, led by our CEO, extend beyond these programmatic areas to include voting rights, justice and policing, legislation and regulation, and environmental concerns. LAUL has pivoted during the pandemic era to offer many of its programs virtually, adding new programs and staff to meet the increased demands of the communities we serve.
