Mission Statement
Guiding young people as they explore pathways to purposeful lives.
About This Cause
In 1922, Woodcraft Rangers opened its doors in Los Angeles and began its mission of guiding young people as they explore pathways to purposeful lives. Always dedicated to access and inclusion, all youth regardless of religious, ethnic or socioeconomic background were invited to participate, and guided to develop a holistic sense of self through the “Woodcraft Way,” a fourfold path of body, mind, spirit, and service and a precursor to the whole development model. Since our founding, Woodcraft has remained at the forefront of out-of-school time learning opportunities in the Greater Los Angeles area and continues to grow. We now serve almost 20,000 participants annually from approximately 90 Title I schools located in communities with a history of disinvestment. Woodcraft’s ever-responsive community-driven practices, subsequent community trust, and values-focused leadership have fueled remarkable agility for an organization of its size. During the pandemic, Woodcraft responded both quickly and consistently by proactively creating programs that were lauded by philanthropic and education leaders, including virtual and in-person enrichment, caregiver support, and a virtual family camp. Since schools reopened, Woodcraft Rangers has almost doubled its frontline staff (seeing growth from approximately 350 pre-pandemic staff to current levels of 800) in response to heightened school needs and the State of California’s vision to make expanded learning universal in order to help youth recover from both learning loss and the social-emotional devastation wrought by school closures. This rapid growth has created tremendous new demand and, with it, myriad opportunities and challenges for youth-serving agencies like Woodcraft Rangers. Focused on providing equitable access to high quality youth development programming, Woodcraft Rangers now offers traditional afterschool programs, specialty enrichment services, academic tutoring, recess support, summer and intercessional day camps, and cutting-edge outdoor education. All of our programs are aligned with the research-based CASEL (Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning) framework with student impact measured by annual pre/post surveys. In 2022, 82% of elementary youth and 94% of middle and high school youth reported growth in one or more SEL competency areas. Woodcraft students also reported strong gains within the area of “social capital,” where 81% of middle and high school participants reported having access to 3 or more supportive adults who believe that they will succeed. Now in our centennial year (2022-23), Woodcraft is proud to continue its legacy of quality programming through continuous innovation and deep community listening. In the past two years, in addition to expansion in afterschool and summer learning and camp programs, Woodcraft Rangers has evolved programs spanning early learning, environmental and social justice, workforce development, and bilingual theater. These intentional expansions are aligned with organizational strategic goals to more broadly and deeply serve our communities and the growing challenges they face.
