About This Cause
Human Services Association, Early Childhood Education Department (Pasitos), provides services to pregnant mommies and children (ages 0-5) through three programs, which are: A. Pasitos Early Head Start (EHS) program is a federally funded, comprehensive program that provides a wide variety of services to 120 low-income families with children ages 0-3 in the cities of Bell Gardens, Bell, Cudahy, and South Gate. These services are also available to pregnant women in the same cities. B. Pasitos Head Start (HS) program is a federally funded program that offers comprehensive child development services for low-income preschoolers ages 3-5. We offer a center-based option to the families/children residing in the city of South Gate. Children in foster care, families at risk and/or in crisis, homeless families and children with disabilities receive priority for enrollment. Additional selection criteria may be used to determine priority for services. Comprehensive services include providing and linking families with social services, health, mental health, disabilities, and nutrition services. Head Start also has a strong parent engagement component. C. The Pasitos CSPP State program is a comprehensive program that provides an introductory preschool experience for children in the areas of South Gate and Huntington Park. This program is available for children that are 3-4 years of age and that will be eligible for Kindergarten. There are 8 sites; HSA Headquarters, Miles, Rita, Tweedy, San Miguel, Scholar, and Westside, that provide early education to 291 children in both cities. We provide two options: 6.5 hours (full day) and 3 hours (part-time) State preschool. Upon entering the program, families are assigned to a Family Advocate that can provide them with valuable social services and community resources depending on each family’s individual need. Families can also take advantage of the services offered through HSA, including health, nutrition, mental health, and disabilities services. Parent engagement education classes are offered to help parents further understand their child’s development and the critical role that they play in their child’s lives. The education of young children is integral to the Pasitos program. The program utilizes the High/Scope curriculum to promote each child’s optimal development in an age-appropriate and culturally sensitive environment. The children engage in daily activities that promote the development of critical social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language skills. The children are assesses by the teachers in each classroom using the Desired Results Developmental Profile 2015 (DRDP 2015). This allows the teachers to see progress amongst the children and plan activities in accordance with their developmental levels. The parents also evaluate their children at the beginning of each year using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ). This allows the teachers to get a better understanding of each child’s background and level of development when they enter. Finally, the classroom environment is evaluated to maintain a high standard of quality using the appropriate Environmental Rating Scale, a universal rating scale that is used to determine the level of quality provided to the children through the environment. The Pasitos philosophy is that children learn better, when they are exposed to all areas of growth and development when teaching staff use different techniques and appropriate materials. Through Active Learning, our teachers will accomplish these goals by developing a variety of engaging hands-on activities that promote child’s play. Pasitos uses the High/Scope Curriculum in the center-based programs. For our Home-based program, we implement the Growing Great Kids Curriculum. These curriculums are designed to provide children from diverse cultures and economic backgrounds with educational interactions, opportunities, and experiences that will help children reach their full potential in all developmental domains (physical, cognitive, language, emotional, and social). Our staff creates a community of learners - children and their teachers - who explore the world together. Children gain knowledge and develop skills in a play-type of environment. A play-based Curriculum, High/Scope, inspired by the educational and developmental theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, Dewey, and Erickson encourages children to explore, experiment, and construct knowledge from their play. We strive to serve all children and constantly seek ways to accommodate the unique needs of the populations served by the program. The goals of the Pasitos are: 1. To offer a quality, comprehensive program for children and families. 2. To provide a wide variety of educational activities to both enhance and expand on the school experience, through support and involvement with the school district. 3. To provide a healthy and nutritious supplement for the children participating in the program. 4. To provide a quality parent engagement component in which participating and support enhances the family unit through educational as well as recreational activities. 5. To assess each child in all areas of development and design a curriculum planned to meet the individual needs of each child. 6. To provide a safe, warm environment where each child feels free to grow at his/her own development.
