About This Cause
During the early days of mental health treatment, asylums often restrained people with iron chains and shackles. With better understanding, this cruel practice eventually stopped. In the early 1950's, Mental Health America issued a call to asylums across the country for their discarded chains and shackles. On April 13, 1956, Mental Health America melted down these inhumane binding and recast them into a sign of hope; the Mental Health Bell. Today, Mental Health America of San Diego County brings together clients, families, professionals, providers, community leaders and the public to collaborate, cooperate, and ensure available, affordable care for all citizens. Some of current programs are: Breaking Down Barriers which focuses on ensuring mental health services are available to unique populations who often are under served. These populations include; African immigrants, Latino, African America, Native American, LGBTQ and Asian populations. We outreach to each of these groups, linking them to treatment services and other needed care, to ensure mental wellness. Mental Health America of San Diego County is in the forefront of working for racial and ethnic justice and services for individuals and families in our community. There is a rise in suicide deaths and attempts among youth of color in San Diego and nationally. We must strive for justice and equality for all. Additionally, we have another program called Father2Child, with focuses on multi-ethnic fathers, teaching them parenting skills and mentoring them, in being a positive, productive father for their children. We teach Mental Health First Aid classes which assist individuals in obtaining skills to address a mental health crisis. We also operate a in-home family therapy program for youth and their families involved in the juvenile justice system. This program provides therapy in the home with other support services to ensure the family becomes healthy and youth does not re-enter the justice system. Mental Health America of San Diego County engages in educational presentations on subjects related to mental health. We conduct presentations on suicide prevention and awareness, mental health disorders, and a the need to break the stigma around mental illness. We educate people on ways to obtain the mental health they may need. We teach anti-bullying presentations to schools and community groups to ensure youth are not bullied. We have began advocacy regarding racial justice and healing for persons of color. He have brought attention to the high rate of black suicide and black child infant mortality. We have also been assisting with addressing the needs of newly arrived immigrants and have been working for justice for Native Americans. We advocate for assessible, affordable, behavioral and healthcare for all!
