About This Cause
Our Story... Little Sisters of the Poor, Jeanne Jugan Residence San Pedro, CA The Little Sisters of the Poor of Los Angeles are a Roman Catholic order of Religious Sisters who serve the elderly poor without regard to ethnic or religious background. They offer lifelong security and care for the elderly in a home-like setting, surrounding them with thoughtful attention, spiritual support and appropriate medical care. The Little Sisters uphold the dignity and value of each life while promoting the well-being of every needy elderly person and keep vigil with them when dying. The Sisters embrace poverty and depend on the generosity of others who are willing to share in their mission. The congregation was founded in Brittany, France by St. Jeanne Jugan in 1839. Since their inception, the Little Sisters have given quality care to over 1,000,000 aged poor. Today 2,154 Little Sisters serve in 180 homes in 31 countries. They have served in Southern California since 1905. The first home was St. Anne’s in Boyle Heights. It became structurally obsolete over time. In 1979, the Little Sisters moved to San Pedro and opened the Jeanne Jugan Residence. The Residents are men and women, are at least 65 years of age and older with very limited resources. To qualify the individual must have a low regular income and low assets. Currently we have 19 male and 81 female residents. 70% are over the age of 80. The Little Sisters provide a continuum of care: 1. The Independent Living Apartments (14 units) are for individuals capable of their own care. The apartments were opened in 2002. 2. Residential Care (24 licenses) is provided in private rooms for Residents who are the most physically capable and require limited assistance with medicine and personal needs. 3. Assisted Living (36 licenses) is provided for Residents who require additional custodial care such as dressing and bathing, assistance with getting out of bed, going to the bathroom or dining room. Wheel chair dependent residents reside here. 4. Skilled Nursing (27 licenses) is provided for Residents who receive hospital-type care 24 hours a day by licensed, trained professionals. These Residents have dining services on their floor. In the world today individuals are living longer than ever before. Unfortunately, for some their assets are not able to keep up with their longevity. Many believe Medicaid will cover their daily care expenses. Sadly, Medicaid is only for eligible low – income recipients and covers only a portion of their long –term care and only after their personal assets have been depleted. As a faith – based nonprofit, The Little Sisters are committed to providing love, family – like generosity and compassionate care to our residents no matter what religion or race – including inability to pay. Though we do try as we may, we cannot do it alone. It takes a community: the combined efforts and generosity of family, church, friends, residents and foundation assistance to provide the best care for our residents. Many of our residents need assistance with things like prescription medications, funeral expenses, and other critical needs. Because 46% of our income comes from Social Security Income, pensions, and government aid pay only part of the cost of caring for the elderly residents. Each year the Sisters must raise over 60% of their operating costs from gifts, bequests and donated commodities. Funding comes from companies and foundations. In addition, individuals respond to the annual appeal, the Christmas appeal, and the newsletter, which is published three times a year with an enclosed response envelope. In addition to raising funds for operating costs, the Little Sisters must raise funds to correct facility problems. We desperately need your help to continue all the good work we do caring for the neediest elderly. Thank you in Advance!
