Mission Statement
Founded in 1952, The Lundquists Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (TLI) is one of the nation’s leading independent, not-for-profit biomedical research organizations. Scientists at TLI create new health screenings, diagnostic methods and treatment protocols that benefit millions of people worldwide. TLI is one of the country's leading nonprofit independent biomedical research institutes and the only one in LA County.
About This Cause
Annually, TLI carries out hundreds of research projects conducted by roughly 848 full and part time employees including 100 clinicians and research scientists. TLI advances include the paramedic model for emergency medicine, the modern cholesterol test, the thyroid deficiency test to prevent irreversible developmental disabilities in infants, low-cost eye drops that have protected millions of newborns in Africa from blindness, and a novel treatment for sickle cell anemia. Current research priorities include the development of a novel vaccine to treat antibiotic-resistant staph infection, improved methods of dialysis for late-stage kidney disease, improved screening and treatment for HIV/AIDS, and an effort to understand the interplay between the immune system, inflammation and chronic disease. TLI augments its research mission with programs that serve more than 100,000 low-income women and children annually, and that provide educational opportunities for young people interested in careers in science and medicine. Because current funding for these programs is sufficient only to cover basic costs, private gifts can make a huge difference in the programs’ impact, and, consequently, in the lives of the individuals they serve—whether it is an expectant mother struggling with her pregnancy, a small child who is not getting enough to eat, or a young person with a passion for science. In its history TLI has distributed more than $750,000,000 in food vouchers to indigent women and children through the federally funded WIC program.
