The Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.
About This Cause
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the single largest, oldest and most well evaluated national youth mentoring program. Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County has been providing one-to-one mentoring since 1961. We provide clear pathways and structured support for committed community members to serve others in ways that cross class, race, and geographic lines. The agency's approach is unique in the level of training and support we provide mentors, the rigor of volunteer background checks and in our targeted programs and neighborhood outreach initiatives to reach underserved communities. In 2017 we will connect 1,800 at-risk children (“Littles”) aged 7-18 to a “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” through our 1:1 mentoring programs, delivering more than 72,000 hours of 1:1 intervention. Access to quality and formative relationships with non-parental adults is not the reality for many children. A recent national report by Ernst and Young (2012) found that 1 in 3 youth will grow up without a mentor. In San Diego County that’s over 275,000 children. The San Diego community continues to see the value of the mentoring services offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County as evidenced by our waitlist for a mentor, which averages 400-500 children at any given month. Current Special Programs: Operation Bigs - military child mentoring for children of active duty, Wounded Warrior and Gold Star Families. We serve every Navy and Marine Corps installation in San Diego County. Ayana - refugee mentoring for Iraqi-Chaldean child refugees to help them assimilate to life in San Diego. Deaf Mentors - mentoring for deaf children utilizing deaf and/or sign-language fluent mentors Beyond School Walls - workplace-based mentoring designed to expose children to the inner workings of San Diego's largest and most innovative companies, to foster career exploration and soft-skill development.
