Mission Statement
Rancho Coastal Humane Society is dedicated to the rescue and shelter of abandoned companion animals, encouraging adoptions into loving homes, and promoting humane ideals through education and community outreach.
About This Cause
Dedicated to the San Diego community since 1960, Rancho Coastal Humane Society was founded by animal lover Maria K. Lloyd who purchased property off a small dirt road in Encinitas, California. At that time the shelter was home to dogs, cats, birds, goats, sheep, and even a burro named Milton. Today, that dirt road is I-5, but the shelter still operates out of the little yellow house where Lloyd once lived. Rancho Coastal is known for its personalized pet adoption process and humane education. We’re also recognized for programs and services that strengthen the human-animal bond, including the Animal Safehouse Program, pet food banks and community outreach that provide a “helping paw” to people in crisis. Rancho Coastal wants everyone to be able to keep their beloved pets safe, healthy and by their sides. We have no government contracts and are supported only by individual donors, grants and foundations, and our Thrift Shop. At Rancho Coastal, we believe that Every Animal Deserves a Tomorrow®. Our in-depth adoption process equally considers the needs of the pet with the desires of the family to ensure a compatible and long-term match. RCHS continues to develop and implement programs that nurture happy, healthy and adoptable animals while also ensuring families and their pets can stay together during hard times. We host animal camps and community service programs for children and teens through our Humane Education Program. We support pets of domestic violence victims, military veterans and seniors through the Animal Safehouse Program. We provide pet food and supplies for pet owners in need through Community Food Banks. We offer special healing only an animal can provide through our Pet Assisted Therapy program. We offer assistance to those grieving the loss of a beloved pet through our Pet Loss Support Program. We run a Thrift Shop where the community can donate or shop for a good cause. Our staff is supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure our operations grow with our community and are always cost efficient.
