Mission Statement

The mission of the California Science Center is to stimulate curiosity and inspire science learning in everyone by creating fun, memorable experiences, because we value science as an indispensable tool for understanding our world, accessibility and inclusiveness, and enriching people’s lives.

About This Cause

The California Science Center is a world-class educational resource with hands-on, interactive exhibits and an array of model education and outreach programs located in Los Angeles in historic Exposition Park. Founded in 1950 as the California Museum of Science and Industry, the museum underwent a major renovation and expansion and reopened to the public in 1998 as the California Science Center with brand new facilities and a vast array of exciting exhibits. Today, the California Science Center is recognized as an international leader in science education and informal learning with a dynamic museum and robust educational programming, including a professional development center for educators and a neighborhood TK-5 (transitional kindergarten through fifth grade) elementary school, to improve public understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Located in an economically challenged and ethnically diverse neighborhood just south of downtown Los Angeles, the Science Center is open general admission-free, seven days a week, 362 days per year. Since 1998, we have welcomed more than 36 million guests with an annual average of 2.2 million including 400,000 from school and youth groups, consistently ranking among the top 10 most visited museums in North America. In 1993, the California Museum of Science and Industry adopted a three-phase 25-year Master Plan to transform itself into a new kind of center for informal science learning. The goal was to establish a resource to confront several key challenges: inadequate public understanding of science; the shortage of trained scientists and engineers; a lack of participation by women and minorities in the sciences; and poor teaching skills and knowledge of science and mathematics by educators. The California Science Center complex, opened in 1998, consists of two permanent hands-on science learning galleries: World of Life and Creative World, a special exhibits gallery for changing exhibitions, a conference center and an IMAX Theater. In 2004, the Science Center completed the Wallis Annenberg Building for Science Learning and Innovation and opened the Science Center School, a neighborhood elementary charter school that provides a science-rich curriculum to more than 650 children, a minimum of 90% drawn from economically challenged communities surrounding Exposition Park. In March 2010, we completed Phase II of our Master Plan with the opening of the award-winning Ecosystems exhibit wing. Ecosystems immerses guests in living, breathing environments housing some 200 species of plants and animals integrated with hands-on exhibits. The addition of Space Shuttle Endeavour to the California Science Center’s world-class, permanent exhibits in 2012, followed by ET-94, the world's last remaining flight-qualified space shuttle External Tank in 2016, enables us to build an entire stack of authentic flight hardware for Endeavour’s future awe-inspiring vertical display. Endeavour will serve as the centerpiece of the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, the key element in the final phase of our Master Plan. The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will encourage guests to investigate scientific and engineering principles related to atmospheric flight and the exploration of our universe, featuring hands-on exhibits, immersive experiences and an exceptional collection of aeronautic and space artifacts to provide a launchpad for future explorers and innovators.
