Mission Statement
Access’ mission is “to address the needs of the most vulnerable populations in San Diego County, especially at-risk youth, recent or unassimilated immigrants, and victims of domestic violence, trafficking or other forms of exploitation, empowering them through counseling, education, case management, legal assistance and career exploration to assist them in achieving self-sufficiency and economic independence.”
About This Cause
Access was founded in 1967 as a delegate agency of the War on Poverty, providing services to at-risk youth and disadvantaged adults in Otay and southeastern San Diego. When the War on Poverty ended during the Nixon administration, Access began to assist hundreds of refugees from Southeast Asia to resettle in San Diego, offering them English as a second language, job skills training and job placement. In the late 1970s, Access became one of the first non-profits to be contracted by the San Diego Workforce Partnership to administer Department of Labor-funded programs for youth and adults. In 1990, as a founding partner of the San Pasqual Academy, Access brought its expertise in serving at-risk youth to this large group home for foster youth. In 2016, in recognition of Access’ leadership among non-profit agencies providing youth development services, Access was awarded Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (WIOA) contracts in all regions of San Diego County. Access has also developed expertise in serving immigrant victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and is in the fourth year of a six-year funding cycle. Also, we have been recipients of Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) to develop small business opportunities for disadvantaged people.
