Mission Statement

CRLA’s mission is to dismantle unjust systems through community lawyering.

About This Cause

California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA) is an anti-poverty law firm that dismantles unjust systems through community lawyering in California’s historically rural areas. We work with people priced out of private legal representation so they can uphold civil rights in housing, employment, health, and public education. Through our 17 Rural Justice Centers, communities can access a broad range of legal tools, including direct legal services, place-based advocacy to expand equity in civic institutions, and specialized litigation to advance civil rights. CRLA envisions a just and equitable world where all communities prosper. To that end, we have provided free, high-quality civil legal assistance to rural, low-income Californians since 1966. Each year, CRLA positively impacts tens of thousands of Californians through outreach, community legal education, legal services, advocacy, and targeted legal referrals. CRLA’s Rural Justice Centers across California specialize in identifying the localized needs of their communities. Locations include Coachella, Delano, El Centro, Fresno, Lamont, Madera, Marysville, Modesto, Oxnard, Salinas, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Santa Rosa, Stockton, Tulare, Vista, and Watsonville. The Rural Justice Centers’ community engagement and needs assessments inform CRLA’s systemic advocacy. Additionally, CRLA’s Programs focus on delivering services to and building trust with particular populations across rural California. These include the Agricultural Worker Program, Community Equity Program, LGBTQ+ Program, and Indigenous Program. CRLA Priority Areas: HOUSING – CRLA’s legal services protect housing rights, preserve housing and homeownership, and prevent foreclosure. Focus areas include manufactured homes, fair housing, fair lending, tenants’ rights, eviction defense, illegal lockouts, habitability, and farmworker housing. EMPLOYMENT – CRLA helps low-wage workers protect their rights to compensation, minimum wage, overtime pay, and safe workplaces free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. EDUCATION – CRLA helps students facing unlawful suspension or expulsion protect their rights to equitable education access. CRLA also advocates for student survivors of school-based crime. CRLA promotes safe school climates that protect LGBTQ+ students and students’ rights to language access and special education. HEALTH – CRLA helps low-income Californians access healthcare, insurance coverage, and public benefits. CRLA also ensures that laws protecting workplace health—including heat safety and language access—are enforced. In addition, CRLA advocates for safe and healthy communities and works with rural, low-income, and BIPOC residents on power-building to address pollution and environmental injustice impacting their health.
