Mission Statement
At the LGBTQ Center OC all members and allies of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community of Orange County join together in a network of support and unity. Our life-affirming programs focus on empowerment, and our advocacy efforts focus on speaking out against hate and discrimination. We exist so that every segment of the LGBT population of Orange County has the resources needed to thrive in their own lives and communities.
About This Cause
The mission of the LGBTQ Center OC is to advocate on behalf of the Orange County lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community, and to provide services that ensure its wellbeing and positive identity. Founded in 1971 and incorporated in 1975, the LGBT Center OC is the second oldest gay and lesbian community center in the nation. We have become the hub for LGBTQ services in Orange County, providing services to more than 14,000 clients in 2018-2019, including: • 3,744 mental health counseling sessions for 437 unduplicated individuals, couples, and families • HIV testing, counseling, and prevention education for 1,500 individuals • health education & support for 2,709 youth • LGBTQ cultural competency training for 300 medical, mental health and social service providers • Information and referrals for 5,000 individuals • 50 local school presentations • A significant police partnership was created with 13 municipalities and the OC Sheriff’s Department to expand understanding and create policies for interactions between law enforcement and the LGTBQ tolerance. Our programs emphasize five strategic focus areas: advocacy and social justice; strengthening youth; improving health/wellness; increasing social support; and celebrating the culture, art, and lives of the Orange County LGBTQ community. All programs and services are conducted within the context of unconditional acceptance of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, and cultural diversity. Services include mental health counseling, social and support groups, Trans*itions Health and Wellness, free HIV testing and prevention, youth services, the David Bohnett CyberCenter, and the Brad Brafford LGBT Center on 4th (CO4).
