Mission Statement
The Mission of Laguna Beach Seniors is to enhance the lives of the seniors through programs, services, and advocacy that promote wellness, independence and community.
About This Cause
Founded in 1975, Laguna Beach Seniors (LBS) provided outreach and social programs on a small scale until 2009 when, in response to a growing elder population, the “Susi Q’ Senior Center opened in the center of town. The larger facility, named for a beloved, resident, Elizabeth Quilter, is shared with a new community center and leased from the city for $1 per year. Unlike other County communities, Laguna Beach does not support social service programs; thus, the center is completely self-supported by donations, grants and fundraising. The Susi Q has been the basis for a transformation from a volunteer-intensive organization to a professionally managed senior services agency. With a solid Board and professional executive management and program staff the center serves over one third of the city's total population who are now ages 55 and over. At the Susi Q, seniors are able to learn how to access services to improve their health and well-being. They engage in educational programs to learn everything from computer skills to estate planning to how to manage Medicare. They are provided a mid-day meal, use meeting rooms to pursue their interests, join clubs, engage in recreational events and outings, and spend time with each other on a regular basis in a place where they are known and valued. An outreach program links them and their caretakers to essential resources for important health services and home care. The free behavioral health program offers a wide range of support groups and individual counseling by our trained professionals. Volunteers and staff make it possible for this population to avoid the isolation that frequently plagues the elderly and keep them connected to their community. The center helps them find a peace of mind that is often elusive – whether through Yoga classes, intervention by case managers, or the opportunity to become involved in special interest groups that keep mind and body more agile. Most importantly, each senior has the opportunity to obtain the support needed to live as full and independent a life as they choose to live.
