Mission Statement
Enhancing the independence, dignity and quality of life of senior citizens and the Santa Clarita Valley community at large, through resource management, advocacy and direct services. The Mission of the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging and Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center is to promote quality of life for seniors.
About This Cause
The Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging (SCVCOA) was formed in 1972 as a grassroots response to the needs of older persons in the Santa Clarita Valley. The SCVCOA was formally established as a Public Benefit Nonprofit 501(c)(3) Corporation in 1976, doing business as the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center (SCV Senior Center). The SCV Senior Center moved to Hart Park in 1983 and in 2019 moved to a state of the art brand new building at 27180 Golden Valley Road, Santa Clarita. Los Angeles County designated the SCV Senior Center as a Focal Point on Aging in 1991. The term Focal Point means a facility established to encourage the maximum co-location and coordination of services for older adults. [Older Americans Act Section 102 (27)] Focal Points must offer nutrition services, information and assistance, and transportation on a regularly scheduled basis. The SCVCOA provides comprehensive services to 10,000 seniors and their families annually in a 450 square mile area in and around north L.A. County Fifth Supervisorial District. The SCVCOA service area includes the communities of Santa Clarita, Agua Dulce, Acton, Castaic, Val Verde, Paradise Ranch, Valencia, Saugus, Canyon Country, Newhall, Stevenson Ranch, Oat Mountain, and all of the unincorporated areas in and around the Santa Clarita Valley. The SCVCOA collaborates with over fifty government and private entities to administer over thirty individual programs, one of the largest spectrums of programs and services for senior citizens in the state of California. The SCV Senior Center is the only Senior Center in Los Angeles County that provides 19 of 21 programs and services listed in the Los Angeles County Senior Center Directory. The directory is available at http://css.lacounty.gov/service-centers.aspx. Programs and services include, but are not limited to, Adult Social Day Care and Respite, Congregate and Home Delivered meals, Information and Resource Referral, Health and Wellness programs, Caregiver Resources and Support Groups, Lifelong Learning classes, Transportation and Low-Cost Transportation Vouchers, Recreation and Leisure Activities, Fitness and Exercise, and more. Recognizing the need for affordable housing for seniors in the Santa Clarita Valley, the SCVCOA collaborated with partners to develop three affordable apartment communities for seniors ages 55 and older. Bouquet Canyon Senior Apartments opened in November 1999, Canyon Country Senior Apartments opened in November 2003, and Castaic lake Senior Village opened in October 2004. The SCV Senior Center is accessible by bus from all points in the Santa Clarita Valley, and a fleet of 17 vehicles is available for transportation services and in the event of community-wide disaster. The principles set forth in the Older American’s Act of 1965 guided the development of the SCVCOA and continue to serve as a guide for the continuation and expansion of programs and services.
