Mission Statement
Hospice of San Luis Obispo County (Hospice SLO County) is an incorporated 501(c)3 non-medical volunteer hospice serving San Luis Obispo County residents who are facing a life-limiting illness, end of life, or grief. We depend 100% on community donations, fundraising events, grants, bequests and planned gifts, and the time and talent of over 100 volunteers to serve thousands of individuals annually. We recognize death as a natural and personal event. In this spirit, we support the community in working with those near the end of life and the people who love them by providing in-home support, caregiver respite, grief counseling, support groups, community response, and education. All services are offered free of charge. We envision a community that recognizes death as a part of life; where dying and grieving are embraced as natural; where all have access to support services without charge; where no one dies or is left to grieve without comfort.
About This Cause
Hospice of San Luis Obispo County (Hospice SLO County) has retained the original model of hospice organizations from the 1970s. Our staff and volunteers work in collaboration with a host of other agencies to support clients and their families during the transitions of life-limiting illnesses through the end of life. Because this agency is a volunteer hospice and does not charge for services, we have the flexibility to serve as a safety net for clients when they are unable to access support because of limitations by insurance requirements or treatment choices. Hospice SLO County provides support for the client and their "family", whatever the makeup of that family network is. Hospice SLO County grief counseling services are available to individuals regardless of when, where, or how the death occurred. As a result, over half of our counseling clients are dealing with the loss of someone resulting from sudden death, suicide, trauma, or accident. Since we do not restrict how long ago the death occurred, we also provide counseling to those still coping with the death of someone years ago. Hospice SLO County offers community and professional education regarding topics related to caregiver support, quality of life, end of life, death and dying. We often provide trainings for individuals to explore their own feelings and fears about illness and death. Educating the public regarding the need for advanced directives and determining their own wishes for care in the event of a life-limiting illness is also a current area of focus.
