Mission Statement

Casa Youth Shelter serves and nurtures youth in crisis with shelter, counseling, and support services, empowering them to come through their crisis with increased confidence, stability, and tools for continued growth. We envision a community where all adolescents in crisis have a safe place to stay, in an environment that promotes personal growth and healthy relationships.

About This Cause

Background: In 1978, Myldred Jones had already retired from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, played an active role in the Civil Rights Movement, and worked with then-California Governor Ronald Reagan to develop a state-wide crisis hotline for runaway teens. With help from the community, she sold her home and established Casa Youth Shelter in the three-bedroom house on one lot, and took up residence in the adjacent cottage. Since then, our mission has remained unaltered: to provide temporary shelter and professional counseling for youth in crisis, enabling them to come through their crises with increased personal strength and a sense of renewal, while in a supportive environment. Scope of Services: For over four decades, Casa Youth Shelter has provided temporary emergency shelter, immediate care, and, mental health services for youth ages 12-17 who are homeless, abandoned, abused, have run away, or are in need of a family “cooling off” period. In addition to a safe space and basic needs, our team provides professional counseling, with the aim of enabling youth and their families to stabilize their lives and learn coping and communication skills. We offer individual, group, and family counseling; developmental activities for residents including tutoring, recreation, art, music, and pet therapy; as well as case management services to assist families with housing, employment, and educational needs. Family reunification, in a safe and supportive environment, is our primary goal. Community outreach plays a critical role in helping bring awareness to our programs and addressing the needs of youth and their families throughout Orange and Los Angeles Counties. Casa Youth Shelter’s Parenting Classes are open to parents and guardians of our residents for free as part of their care, as well as to the general public on a sliding scale; however no one is turned away for lack of payment. We also offer simultaneous teen group counseling so the entire family is working together toward building a stronger household. Qualifications: Since our founding, Casa Youth Shelter has been committed to helping youth and families address their concerns, through shelter, and with counseling, outreach, and case management services. Our highly-trained staff, and volunteers are deeply dedicated to providing a safe, warm, home-like environment for our youth around the clock. As the only 24/7 full-service youth-specific shelter between Huntington Beach and Culver City, we provide 12 licensed beds, a counseling center, recreation room, giving library, and computer lab. We have a strong reputation and have cultivated relationships with community partners that speak to our long-term strength. Our committed Board of Directors represents a wide variety of business and community interests; many have been involved in Casa Youth Shelter for decades because the impact of our work has continued to inspire their advocacy. Our clinical team and shelter personnel are specifically trained in strength-based, trauma-informed care, to ensure we are providing the best evidence-based services and appropriately addressing the particular needs of youth who are experiencing, or have experienced, transient instability, and the trauma it creates. Working from the perspective of engaging the full family unit to help the child has been an effective approach to helping youth stabilize their lives, reunifying families, and providing the whole family with tools for crisis mitigation. Casa Youth Shelter provides the following programs and services: Emergency Shelter for youth in crisis ages 12 to 17 Adolescent counseling, for both residents and non-residents Outreach to schools Youth Leadership Program Parenting classes
