About This Cause

Our mission is to provide dynamic programs and relevant services that are responsive to our adult community. The Mizell Center has been serving the greater Palm Springs area for more than 45 years. In that time, it has become an acknowledged leader in active aging, a welcoming space offering community and kinship for people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Our multi-faceted network of programs and services is designed to encourage creativity, promote lifelong learning and sustain an active, healthy and engaged lifestyle. Monday through Friday of any given week, members and guests bring vibrancy to more than 50 separate activities, lectures, classes and creative arts pursuits. From daily lunch service in Café 480 to dance class, acrylic and watercolor painting, multiple fitness classes, Spanish language instruction, documentary film salon and free weekly Farmer’s Market, our on-site activities are a vital resource for older adults across a broad socio-economic spectrum. Membership is just $35 per year and enables access to such free services as legal aid, financial counseling, Senior Advocates and income tax preparation. Meals on Wheels Mizell operates the largest Meals on Wheels program in the Coachella Valley through its contract with the Riverside County Office on Aging. The County assumes 80% of the cost of the program while Mizell is responsible for raising the remaining 20% In FY 2018-19, we delivered 200,535 meals, an increase of 9% over the previous year. Each weekday, our staff prepares and delivers 500+ nutritious meals to homebound seniors and up to 8 Valley-based senior centers and senior living communities in support of their communal lunch programs on routes that stretch from Whitewater to the Salton Sea. Our professional drivers perform wellness checks and are trained in CPR and in recognizing health and social issues to allow for early intervention through our referral programs. All new applicants receive an assessment to confirm eligibility; they must be 60 or older, homebound, unable to shop, and have minimal or no assistance in the home. Standard protocol is such that until they receive approval from the County, seniors are placed on a waiting list. Ours is the only such program in Riverside County without a waiting list, since we will never turn away an eligible senior. We are committed to never placing a senior in the position of having to choose between buying food and filling a prescription.
