Mission Statement
DSAOC’s Mission is to create a place for connection, information and hope for people with Down syndrome and their families throughout greater Orange County, to promote Down syndrome awareness through community outreach, and to offer programs, services and support that aim to empower individuals with Down syndrome to reach their full potential. Our Vision is to be a one-stop-shop for all things Down syndrome related, and to be a model organization for community collaboration and Down syndrome awareness, to change perceptions and change lives.
About This Cause
The Down Syndrome Association of Orange County (DSAOC) is the original Down syndrome support organization for greater Orange County CA and Southern Calif. Founded in 1978 by a small group of parents who wanted to provide support and resources to new parents, the organization has grown to provide services, support and meaningful programs from prenatal diagnosis, birth, and throughout the life journey of the individual with Down syndrome and their family. DSAOC is the pioneer of hospital outreach and prenatal diagnosis support and has a great relationship with greater Orange County L&D hospitals and has produced materials that support expectant parents. Due to the myriad of health issues that can affect an individual with Down syndrome, DSAOC built an alliance with CHOC Children's Hospital and helped build/fund the CHOC Children's Down syndrome pediatric clinic that opened in late 2009. Seeing the need for adults with Down syndrome to receive specialized care, DSAOC supported the opening of the Adult Down Syndrome Clinic in 2016 with UCI Healthcare. The organization is a role model for working with other local agencies to bring together needed resources and services for families and has a large list of collaborative partners. DSAOC has programs that focus on the social, mental and physical wellness of individuals with Down syndrome and their families, and we have special programs for siblings. DSAOC is affiliated with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) and the National Down Syndrome Congress (NDSC). The organization has received awards and recognition from both NDSS and NDSC, as well as the Children & Families Commission of Orange County and the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC).
