Mission Statement

Pacific Symphony’s purpose is to nourish, nurture and lift the human spirit and forge a community where everyone belongs. Its mission is to perform inspiring, entertaining and healing music, connect communities through diverse programming, inspire youth, provide therapeutic benefits and promote the well-being of the people of southern California. Since its founding in 1978 it has emerged as a nationally-recognized ensemble dedicated to serving its local community.

About This Cause

History and Background Pacific Symphony was founded in 1978 and is the largest professional American orchestra established in the last 50 years. It presents more than 100 concerts a year, featuring classical, pops, chamber music, family and youth presentations serving 275,000 citizens in Orange County. The Symphony is also recognized for making significant strides in both the national and international scene, as well as in its own cultural community, offering moving musical experiences with repertoire ranging from the great orchestral masterworks to music from today’s most prominent composers. As the Symphony positions itself as an economic driver, it also acknowledges the evolving needs of local under-privileged citizens. As a leading arts institution, Pacific Symphony must continue to motivate those who struggle in our community. With these goals at the forefront of its strategic plan, the Symphony dedicates 10% of its organizational budget every year – among the highest of any symphony orchestra in the country – to its education and community engagement programs. Through every new initiative and strategic goal within the organization, the Symphony strives to be the arts institution to which the local community can proudly claim as a beacon and catalyst for economic growth. With a history of sound fiscal management, demonstrated through 28 years of balanced organizational budgets (up until the pandemic), Pacific Symphony plays a vital role in the health and prosperity of Orange County. We look to local businesses and corporations in which to partner in order to achieve community prosperity. Artistic Leadership More than any single person, Music Director Carl St.Clair has galvanized the organization and set a vision for redefining the role of a Symphony in contemporary society. At the national level, the orchestra has gained significant notoriety for organizing festivals around new American music and subsequently recording works for commercial release. Pacific Symphony has been cited for innovative programming practices, fervent to its community through over 20 educational and community programs. In the absence of a resident opera company, Pacific Symphony is producing semi-staged operas. Further, it is focusing on more responsive programmatic offerings through the campaign entitled "An Orchestra For Our Communities" in order to better serve the increasingly-diverse citizenry of the 34 cities in Orange County. Organizational Accomplishments Pacific Symphony strives in earnest toward greater visibility and brand awareness in the regional, national and international markets. In April 2018, the orchestra made its invitational debut at Carnegie Hall, and followed with a tour to five metropolitan cities in China in May. The 2017-18 season concluded with a concert broadcast which was nationally-televised on PBS' Great Performances in June 2018. Commitment to Education and Community Engagement Service to the local community is a hallmark of Pacific Symphony. Through such programs as the in-school music education program Class Act for 30 years, to in-school and after-school musical instrument instruction in Santa Ana and Anaheim for under-resourced students, the Symphony offers a rich array of community engagement initiatives. Each learning opportunity provides local residents with enrichment and hands-on activities to help build lifelong music appreciation and welcome new and diverse audiences to symphonic music. Education programs include introductory music activities in schools, and intensive extra-curricular training and performance opportunities for young people. The Symphony provides professional development for educators and a variety of enrichment experiences for concert attendees. Additional efforts include complimentary tickets for under-served audiences, free community performances at parks, libraries and senior centers, and radio broadcasts of concerts on KUSC-FM which reach listeners across the state and the world.
