Mission Statement

United Friends of the Children empowers current and former foster youth on their journey to self-sufficiency through service-enriched education and housing programs, advocacy, and consistent relationships with a community of people who care.

About This Cause

The program design is based on the belief that intentional, long-standing relationships with each student is the most effective framework from which to provide services. Utilizing a formal Theory of Change, United Friends pursues the following strategies that lead to short, medium, and long-term objectives: 1.      Reach receptive foster youth at key life entry points and transitional moments, 2.      use qualified, trained, and caring staff to implement relationship and strength-based programs, 3.      provide long-term, consistent and committed relationships, establish a supportive familial dynamic and a sense of community, 4.      provide individualized services with a team-based and holistic approach, and 5.      establish rigorous evaluation leading to continuous improvement The Scholars Program is designed to ensure that foster youth in grades 7-12 have the skills and support to graduate from high school and go to college. Through one-on-one support and a variety of workshops, college visits and other activities, participation in the program helps students earn their high school diploma, graduate four-year college eligible, and apply to college. Once on campus, our team of college counselors helps students successfully navigate the personal, academic, and social roadblocks that would normally deter a foster youth from persisting to and through a college degree. The Pathways Program is designed to provide immediate homeless relief and transitional services focusing on mental health, work readiness, education, financial stability, and long-term social support. At the heart of Pathways is the one-on-one relationship each resident has with their Advocacy Counselor (AC). Caring, trained, and master's degree level counselors are assigned a small caseload of no more than 12 youth, which provides for a consistent and deep relationship that is different from what youth would experience when seeking services from a one-stop center, public agency, or another model.
