Mission Statement
American Service to India (ASTI) is a 501 (c)(3) public nonprofit organization that forwards contributions for medical and educational support, and disaster-related relief, to organizations in India that have been previously vetted by its board of directors.
About This Cause
American Service To India: Medical and Educational Foundation (ASTI) is a public nonprofit charitable corporation established in 1981 to enable those living in the United States to provide direct assistance to the needy in India and other countries. Its goal is to improve quality of life through medical, educational, health and disaster relief. ASTI is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt public charity in accordance with the guidelines established under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; its foundation status is: IRC §509 (a)(1) and § 170 (b)(1)(A)(i)-(vi). Additionally, ASTI is registered with the federal government as a Private Voluntary Organization (PVO). As such, ASTI functions as a conduit for cash donations, which are forwarded to over 100 pre-approved organizations for charitable purposes as indicated below. Any organization in India that receives contributions from ASTI must be registered with the Central Government of India as a nonprofit organization under Section 80-G of the Income Tax Act and register for a permit to receive foreign currency with the Foreign Currency Registration Act (FCRA). Additionally, such organizations must submit an Annual Report on activities that includes an accounting of expenses. ASTI is a donor-driven entity whose primary function is to channel funding to donor-designated organizations. It is not a foundation and it does not fund grants; nor does it refer recipient organizations to agencies that might fund them. ASTI depends on the contributions of the generous public to support the programs in India with which it works, and many contributors help channel funding through the matching funds programs of their employers. The scope of ASTI’s relief efforts includes medical treatment, equipment and supplies; health and medical clinics; disaster relief; after-school tutoring; college scholarships; tuition and educational supplies; medical and vocational education for tribal people in rural areas; micro-credit and other empowerment programs for women -- just a few of the specific forms of assistance rendered by ASTI’s recipient organizations. Since 1981, ASTI has forwarded several million dollars in donations to India.
