Mission Statement

The John and Vera Mae Perkins Foundation for Justice, Reconciliation & Community Development (JVMPF) is a nonprofit organization founded in Pasadena, California in February 1983 by Drs. John M. and Vera Mae Perkins and dedicated supporters. Relocating to Jackson, Mississippi in 1998, the foundation focused its efforts on the revitalization of the distressed West Jackson community. Dr. John Perkins's deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of grassroots, faith-driven action among ordinary individuals inspired the foundation's mission of empowering local communities through Christian community development and racial reconciliation. With over 60 years of firsthand experience living and working alongside marginalized families, the Perkins family's philosophy is not just theoretical but practical, shaped by real-life interactions and a commitment to being agents of positive change in their own neighborhoods and beyond.

About This Cause

The John M. Perkins Foundation, founded in 1983, has worked hard to engage the local community in Jackson and spread a message of reconciliation and development across the United States. Our organization has also been instrumental on the world stage. After the death of John and Vera Mae’s eldest son, Spencer, in 1998, the Perkins bought the property once owned by Spencer and his Antioch Community and established the Spencer Perkins Center, the youth arm of the John M. Perkins Foundation. Elizabeth Perkins led the Spencer Perkins Center to develop youth programs such as the After-School Programs, Summer Arts Camp, Junior and College Internship Program, Good News Bible Club, G.I.R.L.S and B.O.Y.S Club, Jubilee Garden. We at the John & Vera Mae Perkins Foundation are dedicated to empowering communities through education, opportunity, and service. By joining forces with us, you can help make a meaningful impact together! In the vicinity of the Perkins Foundation, there is a significant population of young people. Many of the kids we engage with lack the necessary structure and support at home. Consequently, a number of these children face challenges in their academic pursuits and struggle with healthy social interactions. Recognizing the clear need for academic and social support among our youth, our after-school program offers essential assistance. We collaborate with the children's teachers to support their academic progress. Our program includes tutoring, homework help, mentorship, and participation in clubs that foster spiritual, emotional, and social growth. At the end of the academic year, students who have achieved passing grades, demonstrated regular school and program attendance, and displayed good behavior are rewarded with a week-long field trip, called "Dream Big Trip".
