Mission Statement

Founded by UCLA in 1982, Outfest is the leading organization that promotes LGBTQIA+ equality by creating, sharing, and protecting LGBTQIA+ stories on the screen. Outfest builds community by connecting diverse populations to discover, discuss and celebrate stories of LGBTQIA+ lives. Over the past four decades, Outfest has showcased thousands of films from around the world, educated and mentored hundreds of emerging filmmakers and protected more than 40,000 LGBT films and videos. Outfest is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization.

About This Cause

MISSION: Outfest creates visibility to diverse LGBTQIA+ stories and empowers storytellers, building empathy to drive meaningful social change. PROGRAMS: Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival Showcasing the best LGBT stories from around the world. Outfest Fusion QTBIPOC Film Festival Spotlighting the diversity of the LGBT community. Outfest UCLA Legacy Project The only program in the world dedicated to protecting LGBTQIA+ films for future generations. Outfest Inclusive Press Initiative Fellowship The Outfest Inclusive Press Initiative, which is the only initiative of its kind in the world, challenges the systemic access gap for emerging LGBTQ+ entertainment journalists, with an emphasis on journalists of color. Our program provides selected journalists with press accreditation to our festivals and financial support as well as journalism-specific industry panels and mentorship from leading queer and trans journalists in the entertainment space. Outfest Artist Development Developing the next generation of artists and filmmakers through education, professional development opportunities and mentorship. -Outfest Screenwriting Lab A five-day virtual Lab featuring a dynamic slate of workshops, masterclasses and panels, providing 10 selected fellows with project feedback, industry insight, mentorship, and financial support. -OutSet A unique educational opportunity that empowers LGBT youth to tell their stories through film. -InFusion A symposium led by industry professionals for emerging writers, directors and producers focused on LGBTQIA+ people of color (offered dependent on funding). -Fusion Workshops A month long pop-up style micro-cinema and media lab. -Industry Link Opportunities for festival filmmakers to have one-on-one networking meetings with industry professionals. -Outfest Los Angeles Breakfast Series Series of panel discussions for festival filmmakers to expand artistic and professional knowledge. INITIATIVES: Youth Outfest supports youth through education, mentoring and access to meaningful LGBTQIA+ stories. -Free memberships to people 21 and under -OutSet: The Young Filmmakers Project from LifeWorks and Outfest -Emerging Leaders Council Alumni The Outfest Alumni Program helps filmmakers create a path to professional stability and broader audience awareness of their work.
