Mission Statement
PUENTE’s mission is stated within its name: People United to Enrich the Neighborhood Through Education. Our vision - education is the bridge that empowers lives and builds thriving communities – has guided our work of over 30 years in the Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles neighborhoods. We have served over 100,000 people to date and host an award-winning Charter School, adult programs, and summer activites with a commitment to education, collaborative spirit, excellence, and integrity.
About This Cause
Our community represents a diverse culture of individuals who strive for a better future. PUENTE’s students embody the core values that guide our work every day. Participants are primarily Latino from low income working families residing in or near East Los Angeles. A majority of residents in the area (53%) have incomes below the federal poverty guidelines. Sixty eight percent of all adults in East Los Angeles have not earned a high school diploma. Despite our surrounding culture of gangs, graffiti and violence, our families are empowered to continue their education, strive for excellence and thrive in our communities.
