About This Cause
About Us Camp Sigma was founded in the fall of 1979 as a Western Regional Program of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., as a mechanism to provide economically disadvantaged boys and girls with a wilderness experience. Crafts, games, swimming and camp fires songs were integral parts of the camping experience. In 1992, Camp Sigma was incorporated as an independent 501(c)(3) organization, and with that independence came a new vision and charge. The camp's ideals, goals and purpose were evaluated and redefined. The current aim of the camp is to develop leadership skills, a success initiative, and a sense of social and ecological responsibility in the minds of urban youth with a particular focus on young males, which are more impactful objectives, with more measurable results and of the greatest community need. Especially with staff and resources coming primarily from the ranks of professional men of color, the ability to impart knowledge and experiences becomes an absolute responsibility. The camp setting remains an important cog in our machine, but in recent years Camp Sigma has also focused on professional pairings; our “Day of Job Shadowing,” where high school aged young men are paired with a high level administrator from the City of Los Angeles to spend a day at work and see exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest levels of government. As a result, from the ranks of our youth participants, we've seen many become successful professionals; engineers, stock brokers, law enforcement officers, lawyers and teachers. Our Goal Our goal is to produce a future generation of knowledgeable, well-rounded, culturally aware and socially astute young men able to assume roles of leadership in their families, communities, nation and the world. Through our unique five day retreat and follow up training sessions, we provide fundamentals for the future development of the young people participating in the program. We focus on "success skills," teaching our participants about goal setting, conflict resolution, social etiquette, financial literacy, resource and wildlife conservation, and many other topics. We've formed alliances with a plethora of community based organizations with similar goals in order to leverage our resources and maximize our reach. We work with the March of Dimes, the Brotherhood Crusade, the Urban League, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and others, the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife, and others. And we've fine tuned our instructional topics to address subjects critical to personal growth, professional achievement and nature conservation. Our course was developed by a Harvard MBA and former Wall Street stock broker. Our goal is to get young people oriented to always saving a percentage of their income; how to become savvy and successful investors; and, how to get the best rates when financing. STEM Program STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. There are many organizations like Camp Sigma that are dedicated to this topic, understanding that these fields are a foundation for employment opportunities. And unfortunately, children from urban environments are often deficient in these fields. The ultimate goal of our STEM education program is to encourage students to take an interest in STEM subjects at an early age and establish a strong educational foundation in order to make them competitive on a global scale for professional opportunities well into the 21st century. It will benefit them individually, the greater economy and their individual communities. Fish, Wildlife and Resources Conservation Program Camp Sigma has deep roots in the a wilderness setting. A wilderness setting limited distractions as well as gives the youth participants a not-so-common chance to just relax, think and commune with nature. From our multi-year camping experiences, we’ve come to truly value the wilderness settings and teach young people to the these settings, as well as all out natural resources must be protected. Camp Sigma is committed to promoting the stewardship of natural habitats. As an activity for program participants, a catch and release fishing program has been initiated. It’s incorporated in the camp experience and additional fishing trips are organized throughout the year. Additionally, Camp Sigma sponsors a community outreach and public education program to improve energy efficiency and water conservation in urban areas. Our youth participants engage residents and businesses to reduce their energy and water use, and allow them to benefit from lower utility bills.
