Mission Statement
The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles, California is an educational institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and the public appreciation of the Lower Jurassic. Like a coat of two colors, the Museum serves dual functions. On the one hand the Museum provides the academic community with a specialized repository of relics and artifacts from the Lower Jurassic, with an emphasis on those that demonstrate unusual or curious technological qualities. On the other hand the Museum serves the general public by providing the visitor a hands-on experience of "life in the Jurassic."
About This Cause
The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles, California is an educational institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and the public appreciation of the Lower Jurassic. Like a coat of two colors, the Museum serves dual functions. On the one hand the Museum provides the academic community with a specialized repository of relics and artifacts from the Lower Jurassic, with an emphasis on those that demonstrate unusual or curious technological qualities. On the other hand the Museum serves the general public by providing the visitor a hands-on experience of "life in the Jurassic." --- The Museum of Jurassic Technology chronicles an uncommon history of expression and innovation in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Inspired by several historical periods, the Museum’s exhibits reflect the diverse collections of natural and man-made wonders that marked the early development of museums in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A majority of the museum’s programming has highlighted the intersections of art and science and individuals who have gone to great lengths in the service of unusual ideas. • The lower level of the Museum holds ten exhibition galleries, a library and a gift shop. Among the exhibits on permanent view are the remarkable microminiature sculptures of Hagop Sandaldjian; collections from the homes of Los Angeles area mobile home park dwellers; dioramas based on the work of 17th century scholar and polymath Athanasius Kircher; the luminous stereo floral radiographs of Al Richards; working models of Baroque opera sets; and the halls dedicated to neurophysiologist Geoffrey Sonnabend, his three-volume magnum opus on Obliscence, and muse, vocalist Madalena Delani. Also located on the first floor of the Museum is the Library of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Information, which contains a number of rare and exceptional books that guests are welcome to study in situ. Visitors can find a carefully curated selection of publications for sale, as well as an assortment of unique commemorative objects, in the Museum’s gift shop. • The second floor of the Museum contains several additional galleries, as well as the Borzoi Kabinet Theater, an exquisite fourteen-seat jewel-box screening room that regularly screens films from the Museum of Jurassic Technology’s Chain of Flowers film series. During open hours, visitors can enjoy tea from a coal-fired samovar in the Museum’s Tula Tea Room, which was modeled after Tsar Nicholas I’s study at the Hermitage. Beyond the Tea Room is the Museum’s Rooftop Garden and Colonnade, a semi-outdoor cloister with two fountains, lush greenery, and a white marble and plaster dovecote. • The Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. • The Museum of Jurassic Technology has been at its present location at 9341 Venice Blvd. in Culver City since opening to the public in 1988.
