About This Cause

Education is the central theme to all MJF programs. The Magic Johnson Foundation works directly with community based organizations to develop programs that address the specific needs of people living in those communities. Our organizational priorities respond to disparity in access to programs and services that prevent people from thriving academically, socially, financially and emotionally. In addition to our three core programs MJF also responds to the needs of communities that have been affected by natural disaster or other tragedies such as Hurricane Katrina, the Detroit water shut-offs and Flint water crisis. Our programs are national in reach and we serve an audience that is cradle to college and beyond. HIV/AIDS INITIATIVE HIV/AIDS is the founding principal of the Magic Johnson Foundation. Since 1991, MJF has grown to be one of the most respected and recognized organizations in the country that advocates for the education and reduction of new HIV/AIDS infections in communities of color. With an emphasis on youth and high risk groups, MJF has led some of the largest campaigns with “I Stand with Magic” and most successful education and testing programs in the nation. In addition to education MJF supports community based and organizations that provide HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and treatment services to urban communities through HIV/AIDS grant making. MJF has awarded over $14 million dollars in grants to organizations that provide HIV/AIDS education, testing and support services. TAYLOR MICHAELS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Named after Magic Johnson Enterprises’ COO who passed away in 1998, the Taylor Michaels Scholarship Program (TMSP) recognizes students with outstanding academic achievement, leadership skills and commitment to serve their community. The program empowers minority students through financial support, mentorship, and internship opportunities. The supplemental scholarship award supports students attending four year colleges and universities. Students chosen for this scholarship demonstrate a strong potential for academic achievement but face socio-economic conditions that hinder them from reaching their full potential. We currently have 107 students enrolled in TMSP. COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT CENTERS (CECs) Established in 2001, Magic Johnson Foundation Community Empowerment Centers (CECs) are MJF’s solution to bridging the digital divide. CECs are comprehensive one stop facilities that are internet enabled and equipped with interactive technology. In addition to technology hardware and software training, community residents are provided free access to educational programming that includes youth mentoring/academic tutoring, literacy (reading, financial, health and workforce). MJF is the only celebrity driven and NGO that has proactively acknowledged addressed the digital divide since 2001 after others abandoned the problem due to inaccurate information published by the government and other agencies. MJF currently has 16 fully equipped CECs (13 in urban markets and three centers in rural communities of South Carolina). MJF has awarded over $8 million dollars in technology hardware and software to community based organizations. SOCIAL EFFORTS MJF believes that a child should not be a victim of their environment. Through our social efforts, MJF invests in our youth by hosting them to activities that allow them experience the world beyond their limitations. In addition to programs the we provides disadvantaged youth access to entertainment experiences including but not limited to outings to professional sports events and ball games.
