About This Cause

The mission of Center for Living and Learning: is to improve lives by assisting individuals transitioning from rehabilitation or with barriers to employment, to enter the workforce so that they may become contributing members of society. Center for Living and Learning envisions a community where every vulnerable neighbor who wishes to be self-supporting is given the opportunity. CLL's goals are to: remove clients’ barriers to employment to increase job opportunities; contribute to their overall well-being through positive changes in their behaviors, opinions, and attitudes about themselves as productive citizens, and improve knowledge, status, and life condition as a result of experiencing our program. CLL also seeks to address clients' all around well-being by assisting clients to access much needed healthcare services and to make healthier life choices. CLL’s meets its mission through three core programs: 1. Our Apprenticeship Program provides paid internships to persons transitioning from rehabilitation, homelessness, and incarceration, welfare recipients, former foster youth, single parents and other disadvantaged individuals. Over 6 to 18 months, apprentices receive on-the-job training in computer skills, data entry, customer service, and administration. Internships are provided through three main avenues. First, our “Cars for Jobs” car donation program involves answering phones, completing donor files, coordinating the pickup of donated vehicles, processing title paperwork, and entering vehicle sale invoices. Second, apprentices in our “All About You” live phone answering service provide call patching and forwarding, message taking, scheduling, and other customer services to business clients. Third, apprentices become certified enrollment counselors for Covered CA and are trained to provide services in our Access to Healthcare Project. 2. Our Job Readiness Program provides intensive case management to persons who experience multiple barriers to employment. After a comprehensive intake and needs assessment process, clients are provided with one-on-one peer mentoring services. This includes practice applications; resume and cover letter writing; interview techniques and follow up etiquette; proper grooming, work habits and ethics; and job retention coaching. Clients are also provided with transportation to job fairs and interviews, assistance to confront legal issues, help obtaining a California ID, and assistance purchasing interview clothing and work uniforms. CLL employs a job developer to work closely with clients and local employers to provide job placement services. Case management begins at intake and is continued weekly or as needed, including post-employment. CLL boasts a 70% success rate for those who complete the intensive work readiness workshops. 3. Advocacy and Education which includes access to healthcare navigation and case management services, supportive service navigation, health insurance enrollment, as well as outreach and education on identified issues affecting CLL’s clients. CLL is very proud of its success and is the only organization in the SFV that boasts an entire staff comprised of former clients, including the executive director. CLL serves over 600 clients with employment services and over 400 with healthcare/supportive services annually.
