Mission Statement

Educating Young Minds (EYM) is a comprehensive, non-profit, learning center that has been at the forefront of providing an unprecedented standard of academic excellence for more than 3850 students over a course of 32+ years: teaching, tutoring, mentoring and providing resources for students who have a need or desire to excel and graduate four-year colleges/universities, grades PreK-12th grades. Its mission is to holistically change the academic, emotional, social and professional trajectories of today’s low-income, at-risk, underserved and/or special needs students who attend school districts, charter schools and homeschool/ independent study programs in underserved neighborhoods. EYM’s culture, methodology and multi-faceted programs teach students to be responsible for their own learning and achievements and holds parents/guardians and teachers accountable.

About This Cause

EYM’s Organization EYM's overall goal is to lift the academic, intellectual, social, and emotional levels of its student body as they transition and prepare for middle school, high school, college, vocational programs and a career. Students with higher levels of self-esteem set higher goals and have a greater probability of achieving them. EYM extends the reach of its Early Learners program, The Ray Charles/ Educating Young Minds Afterschool Enrichment and Learning Program and CALI College Ready Program to continue the tradition of enriching and empowering low income, underserved, first-generation high school and/or college graduates. Many of our current students and proposed pool of participants from the Crenshaw and surrounding districts do not have the needed support from family members or the skills to tackle the rigorous nature of collegiate program. Many will be first-generation college graduates, especially among our African American, Latino and New Americans of African Descent (NAAD) population. To address this issue, Educating Young Minds’ programs teaches, empowers and motivates parents/guardians and underserved students, supports teachers, encourages success, and changes communities by redefining the level of expectations, professional trajectories and landscape of “how” children learn and parents support them. Included in our target population is EYM's current population of African Americans, NAAD, and Latinos, many of whom are first generation college students with parents who do not speak English in the homes. Our target population will have analogous demographics, and will be drawn primarily from existing relationships, community networks, neighborhood schools and our wait list of students waiting for admission into the program. More than 61% of these students receive free lunch. Given our new location on Crenshaw Blvd., where more than 80% of our low-income underrepresented population lives, we are now better able to influence our community and student population because this location is easier to access. Now that we are in the Crenshaw district, students from Compton, Torrance, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Watts, South Los Angeles, and so many other neighborhoods have easier access with commuting. Educating Young Minds, now located in the Crenshaw District, has serves students through seven (8) programs, weekdays from 9 a.m.-10 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. EYM’s thriving community-based organization serves more than 250 students annually (grades Pre-K-12th), with a staff of 18 teachers, 4 teaching assistants, 2 technical staff for ANE, 2 administrative staff, and 2 volunteers. EYM's students are empowered by a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, customized curricula, and a long-term approach to education. Almost 1 in 4 students at EYM have been enrolled for 5 years or more. After graduating college, many students return to contribute to EYM as teachers and mentors. Today, Educating Young Minds has a 100% high school graduation rate. Eighty-two percent (a consistent 82%”) of its students have graduated from four-year colleges and/or universities, 12% have graduated from community colleges and 32% have graduate degrees and/or Ph.Ds. EYM students are now graduates of, or are attending Stanford, NYU, Cornell, UC Berkeley, Morehouse, Dillard, Tuskegee, USC, UCLA, University of Hawaii, Spelman, Drexel, Columbia, NYU, and Stanford, Howard University, UC Irvine, CSU Long Beach and many other exceptional institutions. The Taproot Foundation conducted a 6 month comparison audit survey (valued $55,000) comparing the EYM culture and methodology to 20 of the most popular and successful supplemental tutorial and educational programs nationally. The results demonstrated that comparatively, EYM provides a higher level of services and resources including: more individualized attention, more learning time, customized curriculum computers, more scholarships, books, and extended hours, Parents/Guardians engagement and greater results and impact overall for students, Parents/Guardians and teachers. What was supposed to have been a short-term solution turned into an unconditional lifelong passion of dedication, and support to others. EYM programs are scalable, replicable and sustainable. Ray Charles/EYM Afterschool Learning and Enrichment Program daily (2:30pm-10:30pm), is the largest EYM program, providing after-school tutorial, academic, social and emotional assistance and support. This core flagship program provides intensive, individualized academic assistance and support with homework, study guides, and tests in English, literacy, basic math- calculus, sciences, foreign languages, history and so much more. In small classroom environments organized by ability and grade level, EYM sets a high standard for academic achievement and behavior. All homework and test preparation, report cards, tests, academic and social behavior, IEPs, attendance and home behavior accountability is tracked, logged, measured and considered when addressing a student’s needs and/or desires. On average, students attend the program from 3-4 nights per week. The College-Ready/Scholarship Program Saturdays (10:30am-1:30pm, 10th -12th grades only), provides $6,000 - $13,000 in college scholarships, academic and/or career seminars abroad, and a laptop computer. After being exposed to college workshops and career path seminars, which included a college bound trip to New York and Philadelphia in 2017 and a financial literacy retreat in San Francisco in 2016, more students in attendance now have desires to attend four-year collegiate programs instead of two-year collegiate programs. College Access and Life-Skills Initiative (CALI) Saturdays (10:30am-1:30pm,10th -12th grades only), is an extension of our College-Ready/Scholarship Program, designed to extend the reach to more students in need and without access to supplemental educational services. CALI is an extension of EYM’s current College Ready/Scholarship Saturday Program. CALI provides an opportunity for additional low-income youth to gain the desire, skills, and knowledge to matriculate through 4-year post-secondary institutions. CALI addresses the following priorities: academic tutoring, SAT/ACT PREP, mentoring, resources, college entrance workshops, application and the financial aid process, FAFSA, field trips, and a custom, curated college curriculum. CALI’s goal is to reach a 100% 4-year collegiate graduation rate. EYM’s STEM/STEAM 6 Weeks Summer Program addresses the needs of K-12 grade students in math, science and the arts. (July-August) EYM’s Coding/ Programing Saturdays (9am -3pm), EYM and TC Leimert. EYM’s most recent life skills and career workshop program, is an introduction to coding and augmented reality. Phones and equipment provided by Samsung and TC Leimert excites our student body and encourages many students to become engaged with technology and various STEM/ STEAM career paths. EYM's Pre-K / Early Learners Program (9am-6:30pm in shifts), is closing the "kindergarten gap" where students are already behind academically when they begin school. This program serves students ages 4-5 with an emphasis on social, emotional, physical/motor, cognitive, language development and the fundamentals of reading (phonetically), writing, and arithmetic.
