Mission Statement

The mission of Thai CDC is “to advance the social and economic well-being of low and moderate income Thais and other ethnic communities in the greater Los Angeles area through a broad and comprehensive community development strategy including human rights advocacy, affordable housing, access to healthcare, promotion of small businesses, neighborhood empowerment, and social enterprises."

About This Cause

Thai CDC was founded in 1994 to address the emergency relief needs of individuals and families adversely affected by the 1992 LA Civil Unrest and the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. In the succeeding twenty two years, we have been making a difference with programs and projects like our East Hollywood Certified Farmers’ Markets, our 106 units of affordable multi-family and senior housing, and our Slavery Eradication and Rights Initiative. The latter, known as SERI, has served over 2,000 victims of human trafficking and their families through survivor support, legal aid, and restitution won from the individuals and companies involved in the human trafficking and slavery. Our Thursday farmers’ market serves 15,000 low-income consumers and provides over $25,000 in Market Matches to public beneficiaries per year. Our soon to be open second farmers’ market on Saturdays is anticipated to serve 45,000 consumers a year and provide over $50,000 in Market Matches to public beneficiaries. We are also part of the Hollywood Family Source Center, which provides legal services, financial and computer literacy classes, case management, parenting and GED classes, public benefit enrollments as well as tutoring and college preparation for youths (1st through 12th grade). We provide workshops and entrepreneurship training for small businesses and entrepreneurs and foreclosure housing counseling for those in danger of losing their homes. Thai CDC also campaigned for and won the designation of Thai Town in East Hollywood in 1999, the only Thai Town in the nation and have been developing and revitalizing that neighborhood ever since through creative placemaking strategies, beautification projects, streetscaping, tree planting, and cultural preservation and heritage marketing such as festivals and cultural days. And now, we will be operating a daily indoor public market called the Thai Town Marketplace which will be a business incubator and social enterprise that will create 18 microenterprises every three years and 40 jobs further revitalizing the neighborhood as it will serve as a catalytic anchor for economic development.
