Mission Statement

At Child Development Institute (CDI) our mission is to help all children reach their full potential by supporting the relationships and environments that shape early development.

About This Cause

For over 20 years, the Child Development Institute has served as one of the principle providers of relationship-based early intervention and therapeutic services to children and their families. CDI is also a leading resource on early childhood development and provides professional trainings to schools, teachers, and professional organizations. CDI focuses on the development of the whole child, including his or her early relationships, environments and communities. CDI’s intervention services include professional therapists who ensure children reach their developmental potential and are ready for success in school by supporting social-emotional, language, cognitive and motor development. CDI therapists use evidenced based practices, such as DIR/Floortime and Strengthening Families. For more information about CDI’s intervention services, click here. Strengthening Families: Early Learning Center CDI promotes healthy development at our Early Learning Center (ELC), a FREE play and learning space open to all children ages 0-6 and their families. We partner with trained volunteers and community groups to offer a variety of programs such as reading groups, nutrition classes, nature clubs, parenting workshops and more. To further empower families with information and assistance, ELC offers free developmental screenings for children. If a child displays developmental red flags, we provide a continuum of care by linking families to community resources and following up with families to ensure they get the support their child needs. CDI History Child Development Institute was founded in 1995 by Joan Maltese, PhD, and a small group of mental health professionals. CDI’s aim was to address the lack of holistic early childhood development and intervention services available in the San Fernando Valley. When such services were available at all, they were provided in isolation, with little attention to a child’s overall support system (family, caregivers and teachers). Services were not integrating the child and family’s emotional well being and were primarily focused on deficits. CDI professionals began training in Stanley Greenspan’s DIR/Floortime model which integrates child development with mental health to support a holistic approach to the successful developmental growth of the whole being. CDI thoughtfully designed and implemented a relationship based intervention program incorporating professionals from various fields of expertise to provide meaningful and effective services to children and their families. CDI Philosophy Therapists use an integrated “whole child” approach guided by research in child development, brain science, attachment and learning theory. Treatment is individualized for each child and family. Families are the most important providers of loving, caring relationships and the best creators of safe, nurturing environments that support healthy development. Parents are an active participant and collaborator in their child’s treatment. Parents know their child best and are the greatest advocate for their child.
