Mission Statement

Through direct support, individual advocacy, policy change and health care workforce transformation, MCHA is building a California where women, pregnant people and families are supported, and everyone has the opportunity to be healthy.

About This Cause

Through direct support, individual advocacy, policy change and health care workforce transformation, Maternal and Child Health Access (MCHA) is building a California where women, pregnant people and families are supported, and everyone has the opportunity to be healthy. MCHA provides information, support, and technical assistance to health and social service organizations, assists individual women to achieve healthy pregnancies and obtain quality health care for themselves and their children, and educates policymakers and the general public to improve the health and social services systems for all low income women and families and to benefit the entire community. Maternal and Child Health Access offers:  Perinatal Outreach and Case Management Program for pregnant women and their families in the downtown and “Harbor Corridor” of Los Angeles, and Boyle Heights areas who are in need of health services and comprehensive case management. The program includes meetings with a case manager, home visits, extra food and clothing, transportation vouchers, assistance with public benefits, limited housing support and a breastfeeding support group. Women may be in the program for up to two years postpartum.  Welcome, Baby a universal home visitation program in partnership with California Hospital Medical Center for women giving birth there. Women may be enrolled prenatally or in the hospital postpartum and receive home visits until the baby is nine months old. Welcome Baby aims to increase exclusive breastfeeding rates, assess for depression, address home environmental safety, support parental involvement in early childhood development, and increase appropriate prenatal and infant medical visits.  Weekly Educational and Support Classes on health and other topics provided by staff, community leaders and health promoters. Biweekly breastfeeding support groups are run by peer and paraprofessional women.  Training and Education for agencies and low-income people on access to health care. We provide a “Core” course for agency, school, and clinic and social service staff entitled, “We’ve Got You Covered” to explain the health services and programs that help to ensure at least some health care for everyone in Los Angeles County. Shorter updates are geared toward an agency’s need to know about health care and social service resources, program eligibility, managed care, health programs for children and adults and the health coverage of pregnant women and newborns. We will create a training to address an agency’s needs.  Health Outreach and Enrollment assists uninsured and underinsured families and individuals by providing clear information about available health insurance programs and health services, screening for eligibility, assistance with applications, and referrals to safety net programs. Staff also gives presentations at schools, health fairs and other community sites about available health services and coverage. Program staff “troubleshoots” problems with applications and with accessing services.  CalFresh (Food Stamp) Enrollment and Troubleshooting – We conduct outreach and assist with enrollment, annual redetermination and problems with CalFresh applications, and work on policy solutions for hunger.  Oral Health Policy for Children and Pregnant Women – to increase access to appropriate oral health care resources and utilization of preventive and therapeutic oral health services, addressing policy and programmatic barriers that impede access. We assist individual clients with finding an oral health provider and troubleshooting access barriers as well.  Materials for low-income community members and for agencies, as well as listings of perinatal and other health care providers. MCHA devises, disseminates and takes responsibility to keep these materials current.  Technical Assistance on health care, resources and public benefits by phone, in person, and in writing.  A Monthly Meeting of Social Service Providers serving pregnant women and their families. Participants come from all parts of Los Angeles County and include community clinics, legal service agencies, private health care providers, county workers and non-profit human service agencies. While the networking aspect is important, what is more important is finding that our clients experience the same barriers to care and devising solutions for the problems. We meet the 3rd Thursday of every month, except August and December, 10 AM -12 noon. We provide a Monthly Mailing which includes a summary of our meetings and updates on federal, state, and county maternal and child health benefits and health care issues.  See www.mchaccess.org – for our training materials, alerts, policy information, staff directory, and more!
