Mission Statement
Since 1974, Meals on Wheels West has provided home-delivered meals to those persons who have become homebound and unable to shop or cook for themselves, regardless of age. Our Vision is to eliminate hunger, isolation and to foster independent living. We pride ourselves on being a resource for family caregivers who find themselves overwhelmed with the responsibilities of providing care and meals to their loved ones while maintaining a job and their own family. Their emotional and physical journey is eased with the knowledge that Meals on Wheels West is providing food AND friendship to their loved ones. The daily visit by our volunteers is sometimes more valuable than the meals to the homebound person. Should anything seem out of sorts our office will notify the caregiver or the police/fired dept. for appropriate action.
About This Cause
By providing home-delivered meals, Meals on Wheels West effectively monitors the health and well being of the homebound person: • decreases the demand for and cost of federal and local food programs • lowers the number of medical facility emergency admittances for malnutrition and dehydration • raises independence levels, thereby allowing other family members to remain employed, tax paying, contributing members of the community Our home-delivered meals program helps anyone, regardless of age, who is going through a life-style change due to age, ill health or a disability. It enables them to convalesce at home following surgery or hospitalization and enables all our clients to remain in their own home, living independently rather than going into assisted living or a nursing home. Meals on Wheels West Delivers More Than a Meal: • Supporting Veterans on the Homefront: In partnership with the VA of Greater LA and the local posts of the American Legion, Meals on Wheels West provides home-delivered meals to Veterans who have transitioned to housing and suffer from various disabilities and PTSD. • Delivering More Than a Meal: Our home-delivered meal program reduces hunger & isolation and promotes independent living. During our daily meal delivery, our volunteer will do a Wellness Check along with becoming that daily social contact. The volunteer may report any concerns they observe to the office and referrals will be made. • Community Connections: Our phone reassurance initiative connects our volunteers with our isolated and home-bound neighbors and friendships develop minimizing loneliness. Once again, we monitor our client’s overall health and wellness and will contact family members and/or make referrals. • Heal Healthy at Home: Our transitional care program assists newly discharged hospital patients recover in the comfort of their home rather than a rehab facility. A national AARP study stated: o 96% of healthcare workers reported that home-delivered meals improved their patients health o 65% stated that hospital re-admissions decreased as a result of in-home rehab enabled by home-delivered meals. • Food & Shelter: Collaborating with St. Joseph’s Center and other agencies, home-delivered meals are provided to the newly housed, formerly homeless, with mobility limitations due to chronic illness, disability or mental health issues. • Keeping People & Pets Together: Designated donations allow us to provide food and limited veterinarian card for our client’s pets that, in turn, provide friendship and comfort to their home-bound owner.
