Mission Statement
Vision: "We envision a world where everyone is valued, and systems of oppression are eliminated." Our mission is to empower communities with opportunity where justice-impacted women heal, excel, and lead while disrupting systems of oppression and harm. We believe: 1. In building community, motivating, and centering all women. 2. Every person has inherent value and holds the power of possibility and transformation within them. 3. Public resources are better invested in opportunities for transformation than on prisons and punishment. 4. Formerly incarcerated people must be at the forefront in creating solutions to the incarceration crisis.
About This Cause
"Linking Promise with Opportunity" A New Way of Life was founded in 1998 by Ms. Susan Burton. Through her own lived experience, she became determined to address the lack of recovery and reentry services available in communities most impacted by the racialized criminalization of substance misuse and poverty. A New Way of Life provides holistic, culturally competent reentry resources for individuals, primarily women, leaving incarceration. All of ANWOL’s services, resources, and advocacy initiatives have been developed through identifying the needs of the people we serve. In 2021, Ms. Burton shifted her focus to the replication of ANWOL’s model throughout the US and beyond, handing over management of A New Way of Life to Co-Directors Pamela Marshall and Michael Towler. For over a decade, both have been personally mentored by Ms. Burton and both are passionate and dedicated in their commitment to furthering the mission of A New Way of Life long into the future.
