About This Cause
The Debbie Allen Dance Academy offers a comprehensive year-round dance curriculum to students ages four and up. DADA's programs include a rigorous ten-month Academy Program, an active Open Class schedule, a celebrated Master Class series, prestigious Intensives in Tap, Hip-Hop and Ballet taught by world-class dancers, a pre-college musical theatre program and a dynamic Summer Program. In addition to the dance curriculum, DADA produces original professional productions that create opportunities for young performers as well as promote diversity and innovation in dance. Recent productions include "The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker" at The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Debbie Allen's "Freeze Frame" at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, CA and The Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.. DADA's Outreach Program reaches thousands of students of all ages each year and includes: subsidized school performances, the Lecture Demonstration Series that brings dance education into schools all over Los Angeles free of charge, DADA's Colibri Arts Program that offers a low-impact energetic movement experiences and an artistic outlet for seniors, DADA Dance Free Days where DADA opens its studios to the community for a day of free dance classes, as well as DADA's Scholarship Program that provides opportunities to over one-hundred and sixty students each year. J.O.Y. is a program specifically designed to support cancer patients and survivors through therapeutic dance and movement. DADA has also recently partnered with Good Shepherd Shelter to provide dance enrichment classes to children affected by abuse and trauma. DADA is headquartered in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles where arts education has been removed from most neighborhood schools. Its community is comprised predominately of low-income African American and Latino students and families. DADA's student population includes young people from our district as well as children of all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds; its students come to DADA from all over Los Angeles. DADA provides services to make its program accessible including scholarships and free transportation for qualified students. DADA has a strong commitment to supporting its local community. To that end, over sixty percent of its Academy Program students receive either partial or full scholarship support. DADA also provides a free Lecture Demonstration program that serves over 7,000 local students annually as well as bi-annual Dance Free Days where DADA opens its doors to the community and offers a day of free dance classes for all ages. While DADA is located in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles, its programs and productions are accessible to all and DADA strives to reach students and audiences in all of Los Angeles by partnering with local organizations like The Music Center, The Nate Holden Performing Arts Center, Grand Arts High School and The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District to present its recitals, productions, concerts, intensives and classes.
