Mission Statement
Harmony Project is Los Angeles’ largest 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization solely dedicated to music education for low-income youth. We have been recognized as one of the most effective arts-based youth development programs in the nation.
About This Cause
Harmony Project uses the power of music to engage children from under-resourced communities. A core value of our organization is that access to music education as well as formative experiences and opportunities should be available to all children, regardless of family income. Our mission is designed to use music as a means to: · Promote children’s healthy growth and development; · Foster safe and diverse communities; · Prepare children to excel in school and beyond. Through the study and performance of music, students develop confidence, creativity, critical-thinking, and other essential life skills. We set high expectations and support youth with opportunities and resources needed to thrive, helping students reach their full potential in a safe and nurturing environment. Founded in 2001 with 36 children, we currently engage 2,053 students in a rigorous, sequential music program, complemented with social support resources, college prep and a myriad of enrichment opportunities. The Harmony Project is unique in that we commit to students for their entire childhood (k-12) and we pride ourselves on hiring highly trained and accomplished professional musicians who deliver instruction on par with pre-professional arts training programs. Our approach is based on the latest arts education research as well as best practices established across 16 years of historical program experience. We also incorporate annual data collected from teachers and staff, parent surveys, student surveys and enrollment/attendance rates. Our students have received notable recognition for their musical ability, a reflection of the instruction and dosage they are receiving. Their musical achievements include: participating in Carnegie Hall’s Music Institute and other prestigious summer festivals including Oberlin and Idyllwild; performing at the 2016 Super Bowl Halftime Show with Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Coldplay; joining the LA Phil on tour through Japan, England and the U.S. Finally, alumni are attending prestigious college music programs. Each year since 2008, 97% of The Harmony Project high school seniors who have been in the program for at least three years have graduated on time and gone on to colleges like Eastman School of Music, New England Conservatory, Princeton, Georgetown, UCLA and USC. When they graduate, students have been with us an average of 7 years. Our alumni continue to report successes that include post-graduate studies, worldwide studies and travel, one Gates Millennium Scholar and two Fulbright Scholars. Our work has garnered the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2011 and the Coming Up Taller Award in 2009. In 2015 we were named by U.S. Department of Education as a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education - a White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
