About This Cause

The Santa Monica Theatre Guild at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre is a community based arts organization which was started in 1946 to provide cultural development, recreation and entertainment for the people of Santa Monica and the west side of Los Angeles. Since those early days, our audience has expanded to include participants and audience members from the entire Los Angeles County area. The Santa Monica Theatre Guild has expanded it’s programing from the original MainStage shows, to starting a youth production program in 2005, a youth workshop program in 2019, Community Discussions during the pandemic, and New Works Festivals for new playwrights. Our primary goals are to bring quality theatre productions and theatre experiences and training to anyone in our community who desires to develop an understanding, appreciation or talent in the theatre arts. The Guild is committed to developing and nourishing arts in all the theatre skills and of all ages. The Guild currently produces five (5) MainStage plays each year, a Youth Musical, five (5) YES productions for young people, New Works Festival of staged readings of new works by emerging playwrights. All these programs and training are offered free to all artist participants. The programs are paid for through ticket sales, donations, and grants. The youth program has become a mainstay of the Guild’s youth development program. It has seen phenomenal growth in quality, content and audiences. The goals of youth program are to provide high caliber theatre productions, theatre experiences and theatrical training to a broad diversity of youth in Santa Monica and he surrounding areas. Our Youth Workshop program provides theatrical training to youth between the ages of 8-18, and we offer this service for free to underserved families or those who can not afford the program. Our DEI efforts of the last six years has expanded our outreach to communities of color, those with physical challenges, differing sexual identities, and other marginalized groups. We have seen an expansion of our community in both our participants and audience. We also provide space for cultural programming by other organizations, including Dennis Rowe’s company of black actors (Broadway n’ Black); Kids on Stage, provider of fee-based creative dramatics classes; Jewish School performances; Flamenco dance companies; Fariborz Yousefip’s Persian play, dance, and music companies; and many more. From a small group of theatre lovers producing shows in various theater spaces around the city in 1946, to an arts organization which provides all forms of entertainment for the community today, the venerable Santa Monica Theatre Guild at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre continues to develop, grow and and adapt to the times, providing professional-quality productions and making the Morgan-Wixson the perfect place for live entertainment for both adults and kids.
