Our mission is to create service-enhanced affordable housing and socially-beneficial community facilities that promote the social, economic and physical transformation of underserved communities.
About This Cause
Abode Communities was founded in 1968 during the Civil Rights movement to address urban unrest and inequity through civic engagement, urban planning, and community-based architecture. The organization expanded its services to include affordable housing production and preservation, and developed its first affordable housing community in 1985. To improve the quality of services at its properties and further elevate the standard of living for its residents, Abode Communities created a property management company in 1998. Since inception, the organization has invested – in collaboration with a wide range of philanthropic and financial partners – $658 million in economic activity through the development of 50 affordable residential communities for some 12,000 extremely low-, very low‐, and low‐income Angelenos. It currently owns and operates 43 affordable and supportive properties with 2,717 homes; and has another six properties in its development pipeline with 545 additional units slated to be developed by 2023. As Abode Communities affordable housing portfolio expanded, it recognized that many individuals and families who called its properties home needed further support to break the familial cycle of poverty and become self-sufficient. Abode Communities answered this call in 2000 and created its signature resident social services program, Beyond Homes. The program provides complimentary social services to help residents remain stable in their housing while adults focus on becoming self-sufficient and economically mobile; youth participate in activities to promote academic, emotional, and social achievement; and all residents connect to communities within and around each development to elevate voices and social networks. Since 2020, Beyond Homes programming has been offered through its virtual platform, gobeyondhomes.org, which will complement its in-person programming as it is returned to service.
