Mission Statement
To solve public health problems through innovative scientific research
About This Cause
icddr,b is one of the world’s leading global health research institutes. Based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, it is committed to solving public health problems facing low- and middle-income countries through innovative scientific research – including laboratory-based, clinical, epidemiological, and health systems research. By developing, testing, and assessing the implementation of interventions specifically designed for resource-poor settings, we aim to improve the health and well-being of people living in the world’s poorest nations. For more than 60 years, we have been conducting high-quality research and promoting the uptake of evidence-based interventions. Our initial focus was on diarrhoeal disease, but we now study multiple infectious diseases, other threats to public health, and methods of healthcare delivery. Our work has profoundly impacted health policy and practice both locally and globally – and this remains our key objective for the future. icddr,b runs the world’s largest hospital for treating diarrhoeal disease. We are committed to solving health challenges facing low- and middle-income countries. Families from low-income backgrounds often face significant barriers to health and wellness. We are committed to serving vulnerable populations through our hospitals in Bangladesh. icddr,b hospitals annually treat around 300,000 patients free of charge, where more than 40% are female and more than 60% are children under five years of age. As mentioned earlier, all patients are treated free of charge, and it costs us as low as USD 30 to save a life. Our hospitals are vital not only for Bangladesh but also for people living in low and middle-income settings. Our hospitals act as a platform for cutting-edge research and finding low-cost lifesaving solutions like ORS, estimated to have saved 70 million lives globally and still counting. The most reputed journal, The Lancet, aptly summed up icddr,b’s work as: “Health solutions developed in Bangladesh save lives around the world’’. Our hospital physicians and nurses have also contributed to the global cholera outbreak control initiatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other agencies since the 1990s and have helped more than 20 countries worldwide.
